Wintertime dry skin

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

It's definately winter time now. We've had a record snowfall of 28" in 4 days for December. After a few days of shoveling, hand milking, dumping frozen water buckets and constant hand washing to get rid of cold/flu germs, our hands are in sad shape.

During the day we like to use Corn Husker's Lotion. My husband like this because he doesn't smell like a fake rose when he uses it. At nighttime, I use Bag Balm on my hands and feet. I wear 100% cotton socks so it doesn't rub off under the covers and I've tried wearing cotton gloves. But find that by morning I've pulled the gloves off. I try to keep lotions near the computer, on the coffee table, in my purse, in the car, in the barn, the bedside and by all the sinks. Just wondering which brands work best for you?

Melissa- wasn't sure which category to stick this in. Maybe you'd like to move it.

We use Avon's Moisture Therapy at night. It's very rich and works well. During the day, I have Avon's Rich Moisture cream by the computer, kitchen sink and in the bathroom. My father used to take a tablespoon of cod liver oil during the winter to help his skin from getting dry.

I found something called Working hands creme at a farm supply store last year..I love it! It is a very thick creme, comes in a short squat tub like cold creme would come in. I use it every day, and then also keep bottles of lotion everywhere..sounds like we all do. But its the best for cracking and bleeding around my nails...which I always seem to get in winter. I had forgotten about corn huskers..my grandpa used to use it when I was little...he was a welder..his hands looked like the incredible hulks hands..he said it made them feel better. I never liked the feel of it though. I have used bag balm too...and liked it alot too.

Plain old vaseline is great for night time, not so good during the day as it is greasy. But if you rub it in well, it is not so bad.

We use Mountain Ocean Skin Trip from a health food store or through Frontier Herbs. Smells like coconut but doesn't make me sick. Drink lots of water for dry skin.

Any lotion with mineral oil creates its own need. It is not assimilated - takes your fat soluble vitamins [A,D,E,]with it when washed away.

olive oil. even lard is better. Or try turpentine - pharmacy grade [you'll probably have to ask for it and maybe even have it ordered]. I put 2 drops of turpentine in my bathwater in the winter.

Baby Magic is the only lotion I really like, and lately I'm using it up fast! The children don't lotion nearly enough in this dry climate. One son's skin is so dry his hands want to bleed. We do the vaseline at night trick with him more and more frequently. He wears gloves with it.

I have found that Keri Lotion, in the blue bottle is wonderful! Plus, I have made an Olive Oil mixture that I use on my hands at night. No more cracked fingers! In His Grace, Sissy

I sell Mary Kay, partly to get their hand cream, which I love! One other lotion I have tried for hands (haven't tried it for body yet, though I hear it's good) and loved was from a makeup company in New York called Mario Badescu. It's expensive, but the sample I received of it I absolutely loved! I am just waiting to order some, I actually like it BETTER than the Mary Kay for winter time!

My skin is so dry in winter it itches and burns even after I have put lotion on it. If I don't use a very heavy cream for extra dry skin, I can't stand it! I broke down and bought some bath and body works body cream a couple of days ago. The lotion is pitiful, but the cream works great, especially on my legs! They have a scent called lemongrass sage that smells very nice. Not too perfumy, I can probably even get Lance to use it.

Lotil is great too--it is one that you would use for overnight with cotton gloves, or would probably work even better with one of those hot paraffin machines (or warm some wax in a metal pie pan and just turn your hand over to get both sides). I have seen it in Caswell-Massey (stores and catalogue) and also the Vermont Country Store (catalogue)

Try coconut oil, straight out of the jar! You can even melt it, add rose petals or whatever you'd like. Very nice.

I make my own homemade soap and I have not had dry skin since I started using it, come to think of it this post made me realize that I don't even have wintertime dry skin. See if you can find yourself some handmade soap and start using it, it retains the natural glycerin and keeps skin soft. If you can't find any e-mail me.
