Peter, when I was still with the airlines (before retirement) I heard a little quiz, just for fun. The question asked was, how do you spell the name of Australia's largest airline? The answer is QANTAS, but most people put a "U" in there like you did. Not so. Next, what do the letters QANTAS stand for? I'll give you some time to look it up.

Gordon, I have a hunch that Q is for Queensland and NT is for Northern Territories, which means that the other letters are for the rest of the provinces. And that is why they ignore English's sensible spelling rules.

Peter, you did good, as far as your guess went. I think QANTAS was started in about 1920 or so. At that time the letters in the name stood for Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Service. No wonder they shortened it to just QANTAS.
