SNOW!!!

I measured 8.5" on the patio table at 0600. Here's what I-40 at Airport Blvd looks like:

This WRAL cam usually shows the Durham Freeway but it looks as if someone turned it to show the are around the Durham Bulls ballpark (where the cam is located).

Well, they've turned it around but lost something in the translation. Hope it clears up later.

I'm happy for you, OG!

I'd also be happy if the heavy snows continue to hold off for awhile. It's easier taking care of business on dry roads. (;

I positively detest snow. Loved it as a child. Don't know when the grinch attitude set in.

Old Git,

If you find yourself out in that mess, please be careful.

Otherwise, sit back and enjoy the look of it falling and how beautiful it makes everything. Remember, it is building up the ground water levels.

I have the a/c off.

got appts. later.

Helen, I'm with you! Snow has lost all the 'fun' it once held for me as a kid and I only see it as a nasty inconvenience now. I think my perception was altered after years and years of digging out, brooming off the car only to have it completely covered again in a half an hour, and trying to stay calm driving while others were speeding around like idiots on slick streets. Those memories supplanted the ones I had of making cool snow forts and sledding. . .

We got a brief period of furious flurries two days ago. Thankfully, it lasted about 15 minutes and the 3" that had been predicted went elsewhere. A fifteen minute "snow storm" is my idea of a snow storm!

Perhaps it's the joints, stiff old joints, that scream in the cold.

-- Anonymous, January 03, 2002

Wow, OG! You're getting clobbered.

Helen, There's a cure for old, stiff joints. It's spelled P-H-O-E-N-I- X, and all of the elderly members of my family who aren't in T-A-M-P- A are in that other place.

Me? I wanna retire in NC!! (:

Carl.... LOL... (and it figures)

Now OG won't even read her own threads!

Talk about priceless...

-- Anonymous, January 03, 2002

Carl!

(That's a snowWOman and a snowman, yes?)

-- Anonymous, January 03, 2002

could be two women with a clip on...LOL

-- Anonymous, January 03, 2002

Yes, she lost her contact lens... what else did you think they were doing?

-- Anonymous, January 03, 2002

It's a good thing I don't read my own threads.

Good thing no snow sculpture contests have been posted for my town. (I live at a very busy intersection, hate to imagine the trouble all those double looks would cause...)

Git, take heart, Buffalo's seven feet have packed down to no more than four. Just make sure you don't send any of those flakes in my direction! (helen, you do know that it snows, quite heavily, in my neighborhood, don't you?)

-- Anonymous, January 03, 2002

Brooks, are you tempted to sculpt mating cats in your snow? >;)

-- Anonymous, January 03, 2002

A town close to me has a well known Ice sculpture contest every yr....nope, never seen one like that!!!! hehehehehehe

-- Anonymous, January 03, 2002

It's 39 degrees, and the high today is expected to be 60.

I think I'm getting a fever.

ugh.

-- Anonymous, January 04, 2002

It's been almost two hours and we have jumped to 40 degrees.

"~We're~havin'~a~heatwave~!"

LOL

-- Anonymous, January 04, 2002

Ah, Barefoot. I wish it were 40 here. It's warmed up to 10. Glad I got the carpet cut and laid over my bedroom floor.

Almost finished! Still messing with the light and need to make a drape/curtain/blind decision today. I had the ugliest brown thermo drapes from Wal-Mart up. Blah. They were cheap. They worked. I can't stand the thought of re-hanging them, tho. Wish I could sew. I yearn for a nice set of lined curtains that will block the light well during afternoon naps. The last set I priced like that was around $130/pair. YUCK. That's how I ended up at Wal-Mart. Might end up there again . . . .

-- Anonymous, January 04, 2002

meemur, have you considered bleaching them? at least to lighten them up a little?

you prolly have to remove the thermal lining first...but if you're gonna replace them soon, why not try it?

Or for that matter, dye them with a red sock? LOL

-- Anonymous, January 04, 2002

They're plastic with a cotton liner (that's nearly gone), Barefoot. Otherwise, that's a great idea!

I heard there was a discount window covering shop near Wal-Mart. I'll stop in there. Maybe Wal-Mart will have some white thermo drapes or at least something in a better color. I do have two unused wool Army blankets over the windows now (it's really cold at night, here). They would make good liners. Maybe I can find someone who sews. I just don't know how hard it would be for someone knowledgeable to sew up two pairs of curtains. Would it take hours? I don't want anything fancy.

-- Anonymous, January 04, 2002

According to my sister, an avid sewer, drapes, not fancy, are quick and easy.

sewing a liner on is even easier.

Ours are thermal, with a vinyl type liner. They look great in the box right now, but when they are up they look somewhat worn. 'Course they're 10 years old and have been thru Hurricane Andrew. LOL

We have sheets up right now, one of which has pastel green, tangerine, and grey, which looks good, for a sheet on a window.

The heater is on, but not running. it is 68 in here, and has now warmed up to 43 outside, and very blustery. I think I need to get the orchids in. I see one has fallen over or maybe the blue jay attacked it again. He likes the potting mix for his nest. We ran out of the mesh bags that produce comes in and so don't have any to cover the two new additions to our orchid orchard. LOL

Thanks for checking with your sister, Barefoot! That's encouraging news. I'm going to track down and talk with two ladies at work who sew.

In the meantime, someone reminded me that K-Mart is dumping merchandise quickly. I'm going to hit the 'marts quickly and see what inexpensive thermos are available. If I can find non-obnoxious ones, I'll put those up today and then move them to the kitchen if I can get better ones sewn up. If not, then I wear out this set and maybe by the time I need to replace them, I'll have a better solution.

I don't know about your house, but I go through thermos in about 5 - 6 years. They don't survive the window-sitting cats for very long.

I used to use sheets in the summer for curtains, but for our winters, wool (or thick plastic) really is necessary for maxium heat conservation. Those Army blankets work well! But, again, they're ugly, and I'm at a point where I would like something a bit more upscale, at least in my bedroom. I've certainly had a lot of years where all I could afford was plastic and blankets! We do what we can. (:

I'm thrilled with the thermal lined drapes (Sears) in the porch, but I think they would be too bulky a look for the smallish windows in my bedroom. But they really do cut down on drafts in the winter and solar heating in the summer.

-- Anonymous, January 04, 2002

Brooks! Thanks! Glad I checked in again. I had forgotten about Sears (and Penney's!).

-- Anonymous, January 04, 2002

mine are from Penneys, and I want to get the same thing again but in a greenish color, instead of the beige.

-- Anonymous, January 04, 2002

We have vertical blinds at most windows--dust drops right off'em and the cats can get through them to look out of the window. They're nice ones, each strip curved, slightly deco-ish, no chunks of light show through. Got them from Windoware--wonderful prices on custom and standard blinds. May be online, don't know, if not check the 800 operator.

I'm still shopping. Need to make a decision today because I need to get this room back together by Sunday night. At the moment, I'm sleeping in the living room! That's not a horrible thing, but my bedroom is much warmer.
