Quality Farm & Fleet stores closing?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

Went to town today and saw a big sign on the Farm & Fleet store that said they were closing. Everything was marked down. 1 employee said the whole company was going out of bizness. Bought a few things that were needed last week & may go back later and look at some others as prices go down.

I hadn't seen anything in the news about this. Have you?

It has been on our news since yesterday. Mostly becasue people are mad because they are not accepting any gift certificates that people have. And I guess a lot of people received them for Christmas and now they can't use them. I don't see why they can't. The local store here is in West Virginia, and I guess people are complaining to the States Attorney General, who thinks they should have to take them.

I sure do wonder why that co. is doing the chapter 11 thing?? Go figure......better not hear about some gold parashutes! Did they just over grow their britches?? I'll miss them! Anybody heard reason why?

-- Jim-mi (hartalteng@voyager.net), January 03, 2002.

Some quality farm stores are closing. Some are being sold to TSC.

-- Gary (gws@columsbus.rr.com), January 04, 2002.

In our area it is the Country General. Always had good hard to find items for the farm, chickens, parts, fencing, feed, and they are going under or being sold or something.

-- notnow (notnow@blabla.com), January 04, 2002.

Hi all, not only are the Farm & Fleet stores closing here, we are also losing their distribution center in our area. TSC is buying some of their stores. 260 people worked at the distribution center.

-- vicki in NW OH (thga76@aol.com), January 04, 2002.

Gary, What please is TSC?? don't know what that stands for....

-- Jim-mi (hartalteng@voyager.net), January 04, 2002.

Is Quality Farm and Fleet the same company as CT Farm? I notice they have Quality Farm on their ads. I hope not, that's where I buy my chickens and I'm planning to buy some more in a few months! A year or so CT bought out or merged with the store that was there, can't remember the name and they expanded the store. The do a great business here so I do hope they aren't closing. TSC I believe is Tractor Supply. The same sort of store, farm supplies.

-- Barb in ky. (bjconthefarm@yahoo.com), January 05, 2002.

The TSC may be Tractor supply Company

-- stan Kuberski (lavinna5@mchsi.com), April 16, 2002.

I have not heard about store closings. But found out that C T stands for Central Tractor. Central Tractor Farm And Country@ farm And Country.com

-- Louis Mac Donald (lmacdonald@wi.rr.com), April 23, 2002.

does anyone know if there are anymore quality farm and fleet store open anywhere or did they all go to tractor supply stores

-- heather moulton (tobiquenat@modempool.com), June 08, 2002.

I haven't heard anything about Farm and Fleet going out of business here in Wisconsin. In fact, the local Farm and Fleet here in La Crosse is actually hiring. The Mills Fleet Farm over in Winona, Minnesota is having some problems though I heard from relatives who live on that side of the river.

-- Mark W (mwaldenberger@planetpapers.net), August 13, 2002.

Blains Farm and Fleet in Morton,IL. is open and doing well as far as I know. The do automotive work such as oil and brakes and carry clothing and have a large toy department around the Christmas season. They also have the usual farm supply that you would expect. I don't own a farm but I buy alot of power tools there. I think that is why they do so well. They are diverse in the products that they carry. There is a TSC store that is only 8 mi. away that doesn't do nearly as well.

-- Jerry in C.IL (fab5flowers@earthlink.net), October 01, 2002.

Mill's Fleet Farms all across the Midwest are doing great. They just build a 250,000 sq ft store in Iowa and will be opening a new store in MN. soon. Mills Fleet Farm out beats Blains Farm & Fleet by miles. The biggest Blains Farm & Fleet i have ever seen was no larger than a barn. Its like shopping at a junk store. Mills Fleet Farm is much cleaner and carry QUALITY products!

-- Alex (cronic@yahoo.com), October 10, 2002.

Do you have to wear overalls to shop at Farm and Fleet?

-- brad pitt (bpitt@aol.com), November 04, 2002.

I know, I live in Iowa and can't find a good farm store. We had a Country General but it went out of bizness, now if I want anything for the farm or my horses I have to go to three diffrent stores. Now can anyone tell me if Mills Fleet Farms are going to put any more stores in Iowa?

-- sheila evans (crystalhorse50501@yahoo.com), November 06, 2002.

The Mills just opened their newest store in Mason City. Depending on the sucess of that store they will most likely expand into Iowa. They would like to build a new store every year so hopefully it won't be long until another Iowa location is added. It wouldn't hurt to write the owners a letter letting them know where you would like to see a store built.

-- Alex in WI (cronic@yahoo.com), November 08, 2002.

I went to their website at www.qualityfarmandfleet.com and saw a news release from the company. It looks like they are going to keep some stores and distribution centers open while they reorganize but will be concentrating their effort in the eastern part of the country. If you want them to know how important having a store is in your area then let them know. Ted Britton is the Vice President of Human Resources and Administration and his e-mail address is ted.britton@qff.com. Tell your friends and family and inundate them with requests, it'll make a difference...especially in bankruptcy court and with banks.

-- k demchak (demchak@comcast.net), November 13, 2002.

I am working in MN on a temporary basis and stumbled upon a MILLS FLEET FARM store. What a great place to get just about anything you need for house and home - and those that live in it. Don't know about the other fleet farm stores, but I can say that these MILLS beat the pants off Lowe's and Home Depots - the closest thing we have in Cali. I just wish they'd expand to the West so I can go there when I go back home!

-- Brian fm. SoCal (durango382@hotmail.com), November 18, 2002.

I know about the Mills Fleet Farm in Mason City and agree it's a great store. I heard their radio advertising from an Oelwein radio station and am wondering if they recently opened one there or perhaps in Waterloo, IA? Mason City would be too far away for the Oelwein station to advertise.

-- Esther Cooling (esthercoo@mchsi.com), November 20, 2002.

No. The only Mills Fleet Farm in IA is in Mason City. Since that is their first store in IA, I wouldn't doubt that they advertised all over the state. Drive up to Mason City and check out the store. If you like it, write the company and let them know you would like to a store closer to you!

-- Alex in WI (cronic@yahoo.com), November 30, 2002.

I have no idea about QUALITY Farm & Fleet. I grew up in Wisconsin and the northern part of the state had Mills Fleet Farm but the southern part of the state had (Blain's?) Farm & Fleet that had the same logo of back to back Fs. Rumor was that the stores founders were related but divided up the area.

The Mills stores are based out of Brainerd Minnesota (http://www.millsauto.com/MillsAuto/). The web site for the stores is quite poor but does have a map of their locations.

We have one of the larger stores about 4 miles from my house in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St Paul Minnesota).

The stores have a rural (I know that that sounds like a mismatch for a large metro area) "general store" feeling with large sections for farm supplies, hunting supplies, tools, building supplies, automotive, housewares, and work clothes.

For the obvious reason of size, they don't have as wide a variety of building supplies as the stores of the same size (Home Depot, Menards) which are completely dedicated to building supplies, but they have a good solid base of most types of them.

-- Bill Fuhrmann (bfuhrman@isd.net), November 30, 2002.

There is a Blains Farm and Fleet in Decatur that kicks ass, its huge, toys, tools, clothes, hardware, candy, automotive department .............etc.

-- Tommy Boy (tdega3@msn.com), January 06, 2003.

I have'nt heard about any closing's where I come from in Wisconsin. I live in NE Iowa now and am having trouble locating one to spend a christmas gift certificate!! Can anyone help me locate one in NE Iowa??

-- joe (vit0918@aol.com), January 09, 2003.

There's a Blain's Farm & Fleet here in BLoomington, IL that has been open for as long as i can remember. It does quite well. Although sometimes if they don't have somthing I need, I have to go over to Ace Hardware or TSC to get it. Good store overall, though.

-- Tony Kimmell (amkimmell@softhome.net), January 15, 2003.

Ok, so for everyone out there...Blains Farm and Fleet and Mills Fleet Farm are 2 different companies...they are also different from Country General and Quality farm and fleet....There is no connection between them... kinda like walmart and Kmart are two different companies

Does Blain's Farm & Fleet have a web site?

How about Mill's Farm & Fleet?

I found a site that lists the locations of several Blain's Farm & Fleet outlets as well as the similar Mill's Farm & Fleet stores.

Blain's Farm and Fleet does not currently have a website but they are working on creating one.

-- Angie Balch (angie_paint@hotmail.com), February 08, 2003.

Mills Fleet Farm is also currently working on a website...coming soon!

-- Alex in WI (cronic@yahoo.com), February 13, 2003.

There is a Blain's Farm & Fleet in NE Iowa -- Cedar Falls, IA to be exact. Great store.

-- Jennifer (jenniferjn@yahoo.com), February 19, 2003.

The blains Farm and Fleet in Belvidere and Rockford Il are doing quite well and have not heard of any trouble.

-- TOM LOVE (RIVERHAWK@INSIGHTBB.COM), February 21, 2003.

Just out of curiosity, Is or was it true that Mill's Fleet Farm and Farm and Fleet. That the owners once were married and spilt up and that's how they became the two companies?

-- Clint in WI. (upnrunnin35@hotmail.com), February 22, 2003.

The owners of those two companies are brothers. Never married to each other...

-- Mary (thekub@netnet.net), March 09, 2003.

Just for the record...CT Farm & Country (Central Tractor) was a company headquartered in Iowa serving, pricipally, the upper Midwest. CT bought ConAgra's retail business called Country General. A short time after that, Quality Farm & Fleet stores, headquartered in Michigan, merged with Central Tractor. And Quality stores was the surviving entity...however, it did not survive. It wasn't long after that merger that the whole company went under. Several of their locations were sold off to TSC, other were sold off to regional farm store players such as Running's Supply. Mill's Fleet Farm (headquartered in Appleton, WI) operates about 30 stores in the Dakota's, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. Blain's Farm & Fleet (headquartered in Janesville, WI) operates approximately a similar number in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. Mill's stores are typically larger and often include building materials as part of their offering in the market. Blain's stores, while typically, a little smaller, still run in the 60,000 to 100,000+ sq. ft. range and have a pretty broad "general store" offering including, of course, very heavily in the farm and rural products.

-- Tim A (tima410@yahoo.com), March 16, 2003.

There's a Blain's Farm & Fleet here in Davenport, IA and another one right across the river in Moline, IL. Both stores are doing fine.

-- Dan Duffey (theduff01@mchsi.com), March 24, 2003.

There are two Blain's Farm & Fleets in the Milwaukee, WI area, and they're both doing just fine. (and also a mills fleet farm, never been there though)

-- Notton Heitz (nh428ta@yahoo.com), March 25, 2003.

Blains Farm & Fleet as a company is doing well. They are working on expanding and trying to supply the public with the best deals possible. They are a pretty good company and are working to be better; I should know, I work there.....and no...you dont have to wear overalls to visit the store, but we do ask that you put your teeth back in.

-- j (stormin82@hotmail.com), March 25, 2003.

man, im going out to get an engine crane today for $139, thats more than 80 dollars less than Checker auto or Autozone was, while blaines might not be the "local store" anymore, theyre still better to support than those big chains, especially if they can do you that good on their prices.

-- Blake Thompson (F&F@auburnskies.com), March 28, 2003.

Love Blain's Farm and Fleet.... Wish they were a bit closer than the store in Montgomery, IL but have enjoyed visiting them for years. They are a great store!

-- Ed Milam (edmilam@aol.com), April 02, 2003.

Blain's Farm and Fleet currently has 30+ stores in WI, IL, and IA and are not closing any time soon.

Bert and Claude Blain (brothers) were the founders of Blain's Farm and Fleet and are of no relation to the Mills F&F.

Trivia...

Eddie Rabbit's band composed the Blain's Farm and Fleet jingle.

There is a Farm and Fleet stock tank used in the movie "Major League".

-- BC (baclark@budweiser.com), April 10, 2003.

We had a Blain's Farm and Fleet here in Urbana, IL. They took a few cats and dozed the place down. But that was after they opened a brand new super-store right next door -- with the same name on it. Sure doesn't look like anyone's going out of business around here....

-- Urbana Sam (sam43@dynalert.com), April 15, 2003.

I don't think this company could be doing that bad because where I work we just started handling there own company credit cards. If a company was doing bad I know they would not be interested in having there own credit card I dont think at least.

-- joel (joelp47@hotmail.com), April 16, 2003.

I'm wondering what the name Mills Fleet Farm means? From where does that kind of store name derive? Help please?

My daughter and I have been discussing things like this which confuse us!

-- Phyllis Piontek (woowoo@pressenter.com), April 20, 2003.

Blain's farm and fleets is a company that is very cheap in my areas. At the urbana il one they took forever to build a new one to replace the old crappy one. Still they are very low in the debt areas :) Dont see that much these days.

-- mark (ffdfsf@fdsfd.com), April 22, 2003.

There is a Blains in Bradley Bourbonais,IL.OK place, used to be more for farms and fleets. Now with the growth of the area, its changing to a yuppie store.Thats progress for you.

-- Bill Jones (rabrand@iwon.com), April 25, 2003.

Mills Fleet Farm got its name from the owners Stew and Hank Mills. Im pretty sure that Mills Fleet Farm was around before Blain's Farm & Fleet. I have been to a few Blains stores and they are nothing like the Mills stores. Even the older Mills stores look much cleaner and brighter then any Blains. The owner of both companies are NO relation! I believe they have an agreement on where they can build stores. I also think both companies purchase items together in bulk and have items (paint, feed) made exclusively for both companies together.

-- Alex in WI (cronic@yahoo.com), April 25, 2003.

Blaine's F+F here is doing good. No news of closing or anything. I shop there a lot. Going there today to price motorcycle batteries. I get a lot of tools there also. Not to mention garbage bags, candy, clothes, socks, 9mm shells for my gun,and the wife buys all her cat and dog vaccines there. The biggest mistake I ever made was going to work there. The automotive garage is not a nice place. I'll be damned if I'm gonna work 10 hours a day, 5 days a week, not be able to smoke, and work holidays, all for $7.50 an hour.

-- Pat in Racine,Wis. (drums@yahooka.com), May 04, 2003.

Hi, Just to clear up any misconceptions,Blain's Farm&Fleet and Mill's are two seprate companies. Another is that they were not related by blood or by marriage, they were friends and made an agreement that one take the east side of wisconsin and the other take the west side. Mills also has a store in Minn and ND. And they are not going out of business and how i know that is that i work at the flagship store in Janesville wisconsin also where the headquarters is for blain's farm and fleet

-- Sheryl in wisconsin (slynch2909@yahoo.com), May 08, 2003.

Although I live in Georgia, I've been buying horse related products at various Blain's stores thourought Illinios for the past couple of years and think they are great. I drive a semi and make frequent trips to the midwest and on almost every trip my wife has given me a want/need list. Wish they were down here in God's country. We could really use a good store like thiers.

-- wendell (rnjumps@bellsouth.net), May 11, 2003.

Found online, FYI: In a press release dated January 17, 2002, Attorney General Jennifer M. Granholm announced that due to her office’s intervention in Quality Farm & Fleet’s bankruptcy proceedings, Michigan consumers holding gift certificates from the retailer will be able to redeem those certificates for their cash value or for merchandise at Quality Farm & Fleet stores that remain open.

Does anybody know if Blains has a website address? I would like to know more about them, but can't seem to find a home page for the comapny. If I remember correctly, Mills Fleet Farm Co. is HQ'd out of Green Bay, WI. The rest of what has been said previously is true. i.e. No realtions, friedns with agreement, etc. If oyu haven't been to either a Blains or Mills just prios to Chrsitmas for bargains on your toy needs, do it some time. You'd be amazed. Thanks, from Duluth, MN now.

The Blain's Farm and Fleet in Oak Creek, WI(suburb of Milwaukee) is doing fine and is also hiring. It is a big store and it is clean. No news of going out of biz here. The one in Janesville is also doing well. Not sure about the one in Monroe.

-- M Riesen (mreecen@yahoo.com), June 06, 2003.

Blains Farm & Fleet is an entirely different company from Mills Fleet Farm. Blains Farm & Fleet is NOT closing any of it's stores. They have 34 stores total, located in Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa. The home office of Blains Farm & Fleet is Blains Supply, located in Janesville, Wisconsin.

-- ray Anna (doryray@ticon.net), June 17, 2003.

I`ve been shopping at the Blaine`s Farm and Fleet in Morton Illinois for 20 years. For most of that time I always relied on them to have the best selection and price on most things you need. The only drawback was their inability to keep popular items in stock. The management never seems to have any control over the quantity of items shipped to the store.Very annoying when you need something right away. The product lines of the store seemed to have shifted from good quality to lower quality cheap Chinese junk. The tool department has become a real disappointment. The selection of power tools seems to be shrinking. They used to carry my favorite brand of power tools...Bosch..But now they have been switching to their house brand called Duracraft..More than likely made in China. At least they still carry Milwaukee tools...but for how long?? The last time I was in there I could`nt even find a hammer drill. They used to carry a Bosch that I liked. And another thing..Prices..It seems Farm and Fleet`s rate of inflation is higher these days. They now have the highest price I`ve ever seen on a quart of Valvoline oil...$1.75!! On many items that were reasonably priced,I`ve seen of late, increases of 20%. The sales they run are`nt near the percentage off they used to be.Farm and Fleet has switched to cheaper suppliers on a lot of items and raised prices..I think the people have noticed too..The place is`nt nearly as crowded as it used to be.At least in my observations.

Some of you are misinformed..... Blains Farm & Fleet, and Mills Fleet Farm are related! Bert Blain started a small farm supply store in Ladysmith, in Northwest Wisconsin, about 1940, and gradually expanded south. In 1955, he closed his Ladysmith store and moved to Green Bay. Later, the company set up headquarters in Janesville. Now, they have stores all over the midwest, although I'm not sure whether Bert is still involved.

Mills Fleet Farm was started in 1963 but Bert Blains Son-in-Law, Stuart Mills, as Bert didn't want to growhis business too big. I understand that, originally, Bert Blain owned a piece of Mills Fleet Farm, but eventually sold his interest after the government was uncomfortable about a monopoly on farm stores.

Both of thes companies have websites, although they're hard to reach most of the time.

Bert Blain went to school with my parents, and I grew up hearing stories about the hometown kid who mad good....

My wife works at Blains Farm & Fleet in Montgomery Illinois. She has heard nothing of them closing there. She is in IC (Inventory Control) and they are busier that bees. Blains Farm & Fleet does have a website, but as far as I am concerned it needs improvement. It is also one of the larger Farm & Fleets around. There is also a Farm & Fleet in DeKalb Illinois that might be closer for some? Also it is a great place to buy dog/cat food and doggy snacks(for my dogs, not me). They also seem to always have great sales on clothing and many other items. And their ToyLand is a ALWAYS a BIG hit and a BIG draw! :)

-- Don W. Dover (donwdover@ameritech.net), October 14, 2003.

Haven't heard of any stores closing. I worked for the company for over 12 years and it was good to me. It didn't pay it's employees very much, but then what retail store does??? I've made lifetime friendships from my store, but am much happier being a stay-at-home mom!! Good luck to all of the Farm & Fleet employees. Yes, there is life after Farm & Fleet; and a damn good one!!!!!! L.T.

For those who really want to know the answer to the "What does TSC stand for?" Here is is: Tractor Supply Company Not much to it but they do have some of the things that Blain's Farm and Fleet doesn't have. If that isn't enough you can shop at Big R, Rural King or almost a half dozen other industrial and farm outfitters in the heart of farming country. Thanks to the American farmer for providing on my table.

Hello,

I've worked at Quality Farm and Fleet in Lordstown Ohio and I loved working there and I heard that they were going to merge with another company I was getting papers from them saying that they were going into bankruptcy. It's a shame that good companies don't last a long time. If anyone is reading this who have worked there back in 2000 to 2001 I would like to say hello and I hope you all are doing good.

i worked for quality farm and fleet in streetsboro and then the one in chardon ohio. streetsboro location had a bad fire and closed completely. chardon turned into a tractor supply store. i worked there for awhiile. it was nice but i dearly miss my quality farm and fleet. i worked there when i was 16, my very first job until i was 21. if anyone else is still in love with quality farm and fleet let me know. me and my friends want to open up a store again! lol it would never happen but that is our dream.... :)

-- kristy (maddiesmom55@aol.com), September 08, 2004.

I worked at the Traverse City, MI location of Quality Farm & Fleet from before opening (1998) until 2/99. Everything from salesperson to receiving supervisior (days, nights/keyholder, evenings, you name it. I left right before the merger (and took a nice $27,000 stock payout). The old building is now a TSC store, and seems never busy at all. Traverse City (store #60) was one of the best performers of all. Kinda sad now- we had a lot of great times! (Can you say lawn tractor races in the isles, go cart races, and pallet jack races throught the main isles? LOL.
