I had a 1998 748, a 2001 996, and a 2000MV. Personally, I feel the MV is a much better performer than the 748 on both side streets, highway driving/"roll-ons", and canyon driving.

The 748 just doesn't have the 996 type of torque to give the 748 an advantage over the MV....or any other bike for that matter! I got rid of the 748 because it lacked the torque and the horsepower and was really disappointed with it's performance.

In contrast to the 996 vs. the MV, I'd have to say the 996 is a better performer on both side streets and canyons (which the v-twin torques comes in) and just a bit better than the MV with freeway acceleration. In regards to the canyons, it really depends how the bikes are set up to determine which flicks fasters.

If you can find a left over, new 2001 996, I'd say grab it instead of a 748. I believe used MV prices should run around $15,500 (There are currently two MV in Cycletrader.com). I heard eBay had one for $12,500 but I don't know if that was the bid price or reserve price, or what condition it may have been in. Overall, the MV WILL hold it's value better than the Ducati (which don't really hold their value at all...I sold my 2001 996 for $12K vs. $17K new).
