Storing Thread

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

I have various ways of storing thread but am thinking of using ball jars and organizing by color--that way it could be pretty and organized. Does anyone else have any suggestions. What about loose threads--always seem like these are coming loose out of that little slit--should I tape?

BTW I put this in housekeeping--should we have an organizing archive because it seems we have some talented organizers here.

Hi Ann,

Both of my Grammas were seamstresses, and I inherited all their notions. (That was about it for the family fortune:)

I spent lots of time sorting spools. Some were so old and brittle, I just threw them out, but those that I kept are stored in clear plastic covered boxes. I can see the contents at a glace on the closet shelf. Some spools, I made new slits for the end piece of thread. I do keep white & black spools handy ontop of my machine.

I like the canning jar idea, that would look old fashioned.

I have a handmade basket that a friend made me, and I just keep them all in it. It gets pretty piled up sometimes! I use light colored thread when I am putting a quilt together, it doesn't have to match exactly. My Mom gave me a bunch of embroidery thread in a box. There are so many different colors. I use these when I am mending shirts and things. I can match almost any color with these.

I plan to work on the archives in the next few days. It seems like I never have enough time to work on them plus type i new things. And with the kids home I get even less done!!

I also inherited all my great grandmothers sewing notions when she passed. We counted over 200 things of thread. I found this really neat wooden spool holder at an auction for 3.00! It holds 250 spools of thread. It can be put on the wall(I have it standing next to my machine. It is just a flat piece of board, that have dowl rods spaced so you can get thread side by side on it. I do not know what I would do without it. I will have to make me another when I have time for my serger thread.

I like that idea Michaele but worry about the dust (or rather my lack of dusting:)...
