greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am a classroom teacher in Chicago and would like a very easy recipie to use in class. I also want to bake several pies at once, or I guess I could pre-make all but two pies. I need enough for 40 children. Can you help me?

Elizabeth,

Can you get 6 pies in your oven? Are you going to make your own crust?

For a 9" pie use 4 cups of cut up apples. (GFS sells them already sliced for about $4.00 a 5LB bag.) For each pie, mix into the apples, 3/4 - 1 cup sugar, a little cinnamon, nutmeg, mace and about 3 TBS. flour. I use clear jel in mine (e-mail me if you want info on this product.) Put into pie shell, dot with a little butter, cover with top crust and bake at 425* about 30 min. Rotate pies, upper and lower racks after 15 min.

By the way, I am in Hinsdale, where in Chi. are you?

You can also just roll out an extra large crust, put it in the pie tin, pile the apples in, and gather and pleat the crust around, leaving a small opening at the top for the steam to come out. Rustic looking, and easier than doing the two crust thing.

Does the school have an oven you can use?

Apple slices are also very easy and done in a 9x13 pan.
