the list of "nominees" for BTS? Have new potential members been invited?

I'd like to nominate ernest from the ozarks. He seems like a nice guy.

Answers

I second that, and he has a cool web site. Daryll

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I'll second the second, Ernest has always been polite, friendly, and informative.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I agree...........just a thought, how about checking and seeing if he WANTS to participate before giving him the password??? We have several that have the password and have never so much as said hello.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

In agreement.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I like Ernest too. I was thinking we already voted on him, but I must be nuts. And I like Diane's idea!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Hey, Diane, it's worse than that! People who ASKED for the password and were (eventually) given it never even stopped in to say "hi, I'm here", much less ever post anything. Yes, one of MY pet peeves! :-(

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

Me too, I second, third, or fourth, or whatever Ernest. Ya think he'd let us call him Ernie? I always wanted a friend named Ernie...

Yeah, Joy; I kind of wondered about that too. I'm sort of worried about Terry P since she didn't answer my last e-mail and hasn't shown up here or anywhere else that I used to see her. She was being stalked by her ex...

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

If Joy or anyone else has a problem with this idea, please speak up but I was thinking I'd e-mail Ernest and simply ask if he'd be interested, if so I'd foreward his e-mail to Joy.

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I've read lots of Earnest's post on CS...seems very polite and informative. I'll cast my yes vote for inviting him here!!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

I've been thinking kindly of ernest as well. Don't always agree with his viewpoint, but he always makes his point well and with, um, ernest thought!!

-- Anonymous, January 12, 2002

How about Alan Hagan? The food storage guy from FL? I just saw some posts from him somewhere - first I'd seen in a long while. Said he'd moved.

-- Anonymous, January 13, 2002

Polly, that is scary about Terry P! I was thinking about emailing you to see if you knew what was up. Arrgh. I hope she's okay! Hey, if she had to leave suddenly, she might not know how to get in touch with us from a new location. Isn't she friends with Alison in NS? Alison, have you been in touch lately?

I don't recognize that last name you posted at all Polly. Maybe I know him under some other pseudonym? (Did I spell that right?) I'm okay with Ernest, but I do think that someone should check to see if he's even interested. I nominate John!

I suppose, John, you're waiting for the okay before you sound him out. After all, why ask if he's going to get told 'oops, sorry, can't come in'? So, as always, anyone with any objections they don't want to post, email me or Jim privately.

Joy, Alan's new e-mail addy is athagan@atlantic.net

He used to have the Prudent Pantry Food Storage thingy at the bottom of all his posts - pretty interesting website from what I remember.

His old e-mail addy is athagan@netscape.net Do a google search on it and look for a greenspun answer; then either click "more results from greenspun" or "similar pages" and you'll find a bunch of his posts from CS. You'll see a lot of other familiar names on those threads, too!!

Anybody besides me remember him?

-- Anonymous, January 13, 2002

I remember him,(Alan) although it was more from my "lurker" year. Where has he been lately?? Here is a link to one particular thread that I liked his response (among others......he comes across to me as someone I would love to talk with) (hope this link works)

-- Anonymous, January 13, 2002

Well, the link worked but I don't know why cause all the wrong stuff is in it. Back to the practice forum!!!

-- Anonymous, January 13, 2002

No my friend is another Terri here in NS. I don't know Terri P. Sorry. I'd like to nominate Bren MacKnee.

-- Anonymous, January 14, 2002

I remember Alan! I still have reams of hard copies of food preservation stuff that he wrote! I still have his instructions on how to purify water posted (2 pages) inside my laundry room cabinet, you know....just in case!

He was a prolific poster. I'm glad he's still around (somewhere...)

Both Ernest and Alan get my endorsement to join the forum, too. I *do* think we need some new blood to stimulate BTS and I think they'd be wonderful members to BTS...

John,

Did you ever contact Ernest to see if he was interested in joining our forum? Or were you wanting me to contact him, instead?

If it's no problem with anyone, I will send an invite to Alan. I don't know him personally but I've seen his posts on various forums over the last few years and he seems like a decent fellow. I agree with diane that passwords shouldn't be sent to anyone until they affirm that they're interested in joining - THEN the password can be sent to them.

As to other's wanting in to the forum. I've got about a half-dozen or so requests sitting in the in-box at beyondthesidewalks_moderator@yahoo.com. I've been very lax about checking that account (I get busy with life and completely forget to check it - not to mention that it's just gotten to be a hassle) and I really don't know what to do with these requests for entry to our forum. They may get a Dear John/Jane letter turning down their request for entry...

I *do* really like the idea of members of this forum nominating individuals to join us. Much, much more so than letting in folks that happen to wander by, discover our forum, and are curious to get in for a look-see.

What do you all say on this subject?

-- Anonymous, January 20, 2002

Would you be willing to run the names wanting the password by us, Jim? It may be someone that we've just forgotten about. My google search turned up a lot of folks I'd forgotten over the past year - and a few that I WISH I could forget, as well!! Who could ever forget Joel?!

-- Anonymous, January 20, 2002

I agree with Polly........we don't always remember people for the right reasons. It would be nice to know who is asking, perhaps it is someone we know??

-- Anonymous, January 20, 2002

Any word on any of the potential new members?

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

Polly...You took the words right out of my mouth!!

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

I'm sorry I haven't gotten around to posting the names of the folks wanting in to the forum - things are unbelievably hectic at home and work right now. I haven't heard anything from john on the status of Ernest nor have I sent an invite to Alan.

Here is the list of people (7 total right now) requesting access to BTS:

Do you allow new members? I have heard good things about your board and would love to access the information on it. I pledge not to cause any difficulties. Thanks. Debbie Christiansen (dc1253@hcis.net)

Jim, I would like to participate in your forum. Could you please provide the password. Thanks. (all295@aol.com)

Dear Jim, Am prepping for the purchase of a homestead. Would there be useful info on the site? Is the password....pu-leeeze? (tried it - no) Mike (ayerblue@juno.com)

Can't get into your forum - I assumed that I was registering a password but it just tells me it's invalid. Catch 22 here - how do I get a password in the first place? Katie Skelton (homesteader@accessnevada.com)

how do you get a password? Thank you Cindy Herbek (dh40203@navix.net)

Hello: I'm wondering if I can get a password to post at BTS. I post and read on CS, Country Families, Freedom!, and A Country Place. I've gone by the name of Cathy in MN but lately, have posted as Cat (after all the email viruses).. thanks, Cathy (logholm@rangenet.com)

hi jim, i have been reading the countryside lusenet for weeks and some of the others also. does "beyond the sidewalk" offer different postings than the other groups? is it the same people posting? anyway,... i would like to get access if there are different topics discussed in "beyond the sidewalk" thanks, Steve Thompson (qzw4jk@naeng.gm.com)

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

Cathy in MN, now Cat, is the only one I recognize, and I don't really remember anything about her offhand.

Johnnie, where are you? Did you hear anything from Ernest. I haven't seen a post from you in awhile. Gonna have to send out the (email) scouts soon! ;-)

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

I don't recognize any of these names, maybe Steve but not sure. I will do some google searches when I get a chance.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

Still here, just tardy. I e-mailed ernest twice and no response. I'll try one more time at his site.

Re: Alan, I just saw a post by him on CS. I'll try to dig it up.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

Well, I sent an e-mail to Alan when I saw that Jim hadn't contacted him yet and he is interested in joining us. Can I send him the password, or does that need to come from Jim or Joy? Joy, I tried to contact you by e-mail but got a bounce back saying you didn't like me - sniff, sniff :o(

-- Anonymous, January 30, 2002

Can I send him the password, or does that need to come from Jim or Joy?

It's no problem with me, Polly. Go ahead and send him the password. The only thing I would ask you to stress to him when you send him the password is that he NOT share it with others - If someone he knows wants in to the forum then he should bring it to the attention of either the moderator(s) or the group as a whole.

Thanks.
