testimonials

sounds like cassidy wants a testimonial, christ he would have had a game had Dalglish been in charge!!!!

"Sure, I never got a testimonial match," he said. "You know, it's only in the last few weeks that I've found out I actually qualified for one.

"I always thought you had to be with a club for 10 years and I left after nine years and nine months.

"However, the accepted rule is 10 seasons and not 10 years and I did that at St James's Park.

"There was never anything in your contract, of course, but I've watched a load of lads get a game at Newcastle down the years and I guess I've missed out all this time on what I'd earned."

No bitterness, I might stress, but it's nevertheless a great pity when considered against millionaires like Ryan Giggs being awarded a testimonial blank cheque at Manchester United.

I've always thought such generosity was meant for old-time players who missed out on today's gravy train.

I disagree with modern-time testimonials, like Lee's or Giggs', but I'd go to the match for someone like Cassidy, IF he's out of work / down on his luck / skint or whatever; if he really needs the dosh.
