Have any of you read the books: Back to Basics by Norman Mack(a readers digest), and the book: Making Your Small Farm Profitable by Ron Macher? And if you have what is your input on them?

I have Back to Basics. It's a nice book with good illustrations. It covers alot of topics but not much in depth. Written more for someone new to the concepts but filled with ideas for anyone. Doubt you'd be disappointed with it.

I think you would like reading "The Have More Plan" by Ed and Carolyn Robinson. It is reprinted in Issue #2 of The Mother Earth News, it was written in the 40's, but it is still a valuable tool for me.

I found them both quite interesting.

Build it Better Yourself by the editors of Organic Gardening and Farming is a good "get started" book.

I have them both and enjoy them. My son got the Making your small farm profitable book for me on my birthday. It has given me alot of ideas, hopefully some of them I will be able to do. I love the Carla Emery Old Fashioned recipe book, (now called An Encyclopedia of Country Living) book best of all, and find it essential. I agree that the Back to Basics covers alot, but none in depth.Do enjoy it though. I have had my copy for years and years. I have alot of books on individual subjects too. Another one I love that is out of print I beleive is "Country Women". It covers alot!!It is sort of hippyish and very slanted toward women doing things without men, but I learned alot from it. There are lots of times I don't have help from someone stronger. And even if I do........the ideas still are good. There are all sorts of plans to build things, and in depth animal sections, gardening. REally a good book information wise. I got mine at a used book store.
