Outlet/downtown Mall

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

It loks like Wheeling may be the site of an outlet type mall. They are going to turn lots of old buildings into little shops, and build some new ones too.

It is a $100 million dollar project, which means lots of construction work. The developer is planning to use local laborers which is good for us, as that is where Cale's local is located. We are hoping this goes through, as it will be spectacular for the local economy. They are going to try to incorporate many of the little businesses also.

Our area gets a lot of tourism business because of the "Festival of Lights" at Oglebay park, so this will be a way of expanding on this and trying to build up the tourism year round.

Those things are great for grabbing tourist dollars. I know women who plan their vacation routes around where the outlet malls are. Downside--there aren't many real "buys" in them. The name brand stores usually market a specific line for them, and have very few actual top line items at true discount prices. but they are still fun

I know Melina, they are designed for the tourist. The reason I would like to see it happen, is becasue of the construction jobs. It would be really nice to get a few good years of wages here. I don't think it is the kind of place I would shop often. Probably just to check it out, or maybe for special occassions. But I am not a big shopper in general. I usually just get what I need and get out as fast as possible.

I am not big on outlet malls either--the deals just aren't there.

If you shop a lot (I don't, but know people who do), you're better off making friends with the sales people in the department stores and have them let you know when something will go on sale and they can hold it for you.
