Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

On Monday our country celebrates the life of Rev. Dr. King? Our church will be having a celebration. I will be speaking in another city on the holiday and one of the questions the MLK commission in that city asked me to include in my speech is: How is Dr. King's words and thoughts apply to us in current time. What are your thoughts. I want to add that Montana was one of the last states to honor Dr. King on the national holiday. There were many activists, across the state that fought hard with the state legislature to get this holiday recognized. Some will be at the ceremony. Anyway what is your church, city doing to honor this great man. And how can we use his words and teaching within our own denomination.

Sorry for the typo's in some of my posts. I have nerve damage in my foot, and it is painful, and sometimes I do not make any sense. Though I danced in church on sunday. It is healing and Jesus stays with me.

You type with your feet???:-)

Mr. Smarty pants, you better be glad you are my brother Rob. Only a baby brother would say that. O.k. now you owe me big time. I want you to buy me the latest Hillsong CD. Rob I am on so much medication, I probably have typed with my feet, that would explaing the typo's. Thanks for making me smile Rob. I am not going to the fling the cow game. Keep me in prayer.

Oops Rob, another typo, I AM going to play the fling the cow game.;-)

I think you've had about enough medicine Sister!

Ah, humor on the web. Most of the time, AME Today isn't the place to go for that. This is my serious BB. When I want to engage in non- serious banter, I go to my "Religion and Humor" BB. We've been having a great conversation on outhouses lately. I also get to tell (type) my jokes to a fresh audience.

There's other joke pages, and a lot of them are pretty good too. I found one with literally hundreds of "Redneck" jokes that kept me in stitches for an hour. Unfortunately you also run the risk of off- color stuff, so you need to watch where you're surfing.

Anyway, back to your MLK holiday thread. I'll simply close by saying that if yer momma has a spittoon on the end of her ironing board, yew might be a...(take a guess).

Hey wait a minute Rob, where is my new Hillsong CD? It is bad enough you left me with the red neck joke and I am playing that cow game against my daughter;-)

I live in Georgia, MLK's home state, so they'll celebrates all day. Not sure about Macon. I must work. Our corporation do not give us this day as a paid holiday.

As for Fling the Cow...I love this game. My highest score is 380 and climbing. What about you--Bro. Rob and Pastor Denise? Now, I know that Bro. Rob has perfected his fling (heck he introduced us to the game), however, there is room for a rookie like me to crash him.

As for Sister Denise, I'll take pity on you. Sorry about your foot. You said that you danced on Sunday. That same power is here today. Find that same connection and the pain will cease!

I agree, Bro. Rob, humor is good.

In Love and Light, Brenda

Brenda I love you! I am healing, God is so good. You are right about the power of the Holy Spirit, when I am doing our worship services I feel NO Pain. And in terms of fling the cow. I have only gotten up to 250. I just can't get any higher, I always end up flinging by cow way off the computer. So sister Brenda what is your secret. You would think living In Montana I would have some special advantage;-) Don't worry about my feet, the pain I am feeling is because the nerves in my feet are healing. That is not suppose to happen to Diabetics who have had diabetes for 37 years. But everyone on my team is a christian and they know it is God who is doing this!! Part of my treatment plan has a spiritual component. Luv, ya, I do hope we will get some others to play fling the cow!

I love you too, Pastor Denise. My secret is ...I figure on long to hold the cow down. Generally it is between 5-7 seconds. Then I let go. This usually lands me somewhere in the grid. When I hit it just right--I get 50.

The power heal to us in within. Pastor Denise, many of us don't take care of ourselves. Eating the wrong food, not exercising which causes all kinds of health problems. If we follow the example of Christ...he ate to live. Not live to eat. There is a big difference.

Anyway, take care of yourself and be blessed!

Brenda you are so right about health. Diabetes has become a nation wide problem. Particularly with African-Americans. Diabetes is a genetic disease and tends to be very high in African-American and Native American populations. I am one of the blessed ones. To have lived 37 years with Diabetes is a long time. I developed it when I was 12. I know it is spiritual intervention. My health generally is really good. I can't snow shoe for awhile. Brenda Diabets, is a very complicated Disease. It has not interfered with my work. The pain in my foot is getting better. And I have a weight lifting competition at the end of the year. One of my members said yesterday that she and her boss are entering a weight lifting competition. And wanted to know if it were o.k. You should have seen her face when I told her I have been doing it off and on for years. I bench press. I would love for our Denomination to have a workshop on diseases that tend to run In the African-American population. Such as Diabets, High blood pressure etc. We must not be so quick to judge those with these diseases. But offer support and love. My Blood sugars are excellent.

Diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer runs in my family. All (in my opinion) addresses the diet. One that is loaded with pig fat, sugar, salt and chemicals. Pastor Denise, my New Year's resolution was to eat to live. My body has rejecting foods (the list is long-- the latest being cake and pizza. I am so sick, I pray that when I get this mess out of my system that I will never put a piece of cake in my mouth AGAIN) that are not good for me. No doctor intervention, just "IAM" taking care of business. You're correct about the church teaching about our dietary needs...we don't need half the stuff we consume.

Wieght lifting, that sounds fun. I thought about doing very physcial myself...but don't have a lot of time. What do you suggest?

Brenda

Well we are off topic but that is o.k. I think it important to discuss health issues. My diet has changed radically since I have been doing the Prayer of Jabez! I did not know that one of the blessings would be an improvement in my health. As I have said before my Diabetic educator and doctor are christians and the prayer of Jabez is part of my treatment plan. Weight lifting is fun. I got started ten years ago on the advice of my doctor. Weight lifting combined with aerobic excercise is the fastest way to lose weight plus weight lifting lowers blood sugar levels. If you have a gym that would be the best place to start, and doing cardio workout and weight lifting should only take an hour. If you could do three days a week that is great. I am with you Brenda, I am taking care of myself, but I tell you doing the Prayer of Jabez has really changed my life. Keep me posted. Start small, go to the gym for 10 minutes the first week. Or walk for 10 minutes then build on it. One last thing women cannot build huge muscles. When you see women that do have huge muscles they are probably on steroids. Natural bodybuilders do not do steroids. Good luck!

I love Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King so much! Yesterday I was interviewed on Montana PBS radio about my speech I will be delivering on Monday. One of the comments by the interviewee was the power of Dr. Kings voice and the cadence of his voice. I was pleased that statement was made for it provided an opportunity to talk about the Black Church and our style of preaching. I was asked to share one area that I would speak on. One of my topics I will talk about the "freedom riders" in my speech about Dr. King. Young people black and white coming together to help register blacks to vote in the south, I think it important that young people know that they were an intregal part of the civil rights movement. There is still much work to be done and I do believe Dr. King wants us to continue with his dream. Were any of you freedom riders, or did you know someone who was? Also were the A.M.E churches activive in the civil rights movement?

-- Anonymous, January 19, 2002

As we remember Sister Rosa Parks and her incredible contribution to the civil rights movement (God Bless her) let us also remember she is A.M.E!! A Baptist Preacher Dr. King propeled the movement forward, but God used an A.M.E to get the ball rolling.

I'm sorry but this is rather embarrising but what does AME stand for anyway?

Oh, and MLK was a good man! He was in it for the rights of his people. And he gave all the Glory to God, not to himself like many "Civil Rights Leaders" today who just want their own National Holiday. Martin Luther King will be missed. He should be on the $2 bill should they ever reissue it.

That or the Gold Dollar. But I rather like having that Native Amercan Woman on their. I have some Indian in me.

Sounds like a good idea. Let's see, who's on our money? Washington, Lincoln, FDR, Jefferson, Franklin, Hamilton. Yep, they certainly had profound influence on our country.

Jackson, US Grant, Eisenhower, Sacajawea? Yeah, they influenced history, but I'd say Dr. King had at least as much or more influence on America than this bunch. Sure, he'd rate a currency, and if we're not going to issue $2 bills anytime soon, could maybe even bump one of the second group. My vote goes to bumping Grant off of the $50.
