WOOD BURNING

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I just cut up a tree that blew down last year in our woods. This was a walnut tree but it was already dead before it blew over, no bark was on it and it looked like it might be soft in spots. But when I cut into it, it was solid wood, no rotted spots at all. My question is, can I burn it now? Would there be any sap left in it? Our should I wait till next year to burn it?? DEX

I would think that you could burn in now OK. Suppose to be aged well before burning to prevent any creosote build up in you chimney and safety factors. We do burn green wood on occassion now. In the our earlier homesteading years ( only 20 years ago here) we use to buy pine slab wood at $5 a pick up load. The girls and I would go every week and get a couple truck loads to keep us going for another week. It was green and not the greatest but the price was right and all we could afford at the time. Hubby use to clean the chimney very, very often through that winter to be safe. I guess it depends how cold your are and what wood is available. Good Luck !!!

The question is not so much whether you CAN burn it - it's dry and seasoned - of course you can. The question is whether you SHOULD burn it. Walnut is a valuable timber for joinery - if you haven't chopped it up into little bits, then a seasoned walnut sawlog could probably get you enough money to buy a LOT of firewood.

if it was dead before it blew over,, lumber companies wont be intersted in it to much. I have standing dead oak all over this area, ,its all most of us burn,, as long aas it is solid in the middle,,it will burn just fine

Dex,take a cut piece and hit it with a hammer on the cut end,if it makes a "PING" type of a noise it is proably dry enough,if it is more of a dense "Thud" noise its proably still wet.
