77mm Hood needed for 85L 1.2 FD

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon FD : One Thread

I need a plastic (not rubber) lens hood for a Canon 85 1.2L FD (manual focus) lens. I would love to buy an original Canon Hood if I can. Can I order either a new, or used 77mm hood for this lens?

thanks, dave

The 85/1.2L uses a 72mm filter thread, NOT a 77mm. The original Canon hood is their model BT-72 (presumably for "Bayonet-Telephoto- 72mm lens barrel"). Most Canon New FD hoods, the BT-72 attach by a proprietary bayonet fitting to lugs on the outside of the lens barrel. The do not screw onto the filter threads. The hood is no longer manufactured but is available used (on eBay, for example) for way too much money. The hood, by the way, is 3-9/16" outer diametre and takes a size medium neoprene slip-on Hood Hat by OpTech.

If you like, you can alternatively buy a rigid metal short-telephoto hood that screws into 72mm threads. Many camera shops will carry such an aftermarket (third party) item.
