Scratches on negative

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Printing & Finishing : One Thread

Hi. I have a negative frame which I think is a great photo. The only problem is that there are some scratches on the non-emulsion side which produce dark, sharp lines. Is there any way to fix these?

I have used a product that I bought at the store, you paint the liquid on the neg. when it dries, it worked fine.

Edwal no-scratch works. Some folks use nose grease i.e., oils from the skin on the side of your nose.... Cheers, DJ

If the no scratch doesn't do it you might think seriously of having the negative digitally scanned at a high resolution, the scratch touched out and a new negative made from the digital scan. I have this done for restoration so I can print new fibre prints to match the ones I am restoring.

An "old-fashioned" solution that sounds gross, but works very well is to simply rub some of the skin oils from the side of your nose onto the glossy side of the negative. Does the same as the commercial "no-scratch" stuff for free.
