"We must become gardeners again to keep the country growing."

Oh if only everyone could enjoy the absolute privilege of growing there own food. I just love the smell, and feel of fresh plowed earth. I like to take my shoes off and walk through it, I like to sit in the middle of it and stare at the sky. I like to run my fingers through it. It is like being in love, this feeling for the dirt. I think it is something you crave when you are born. And to tell the truth I am missing it right now, here in the depths of January, in the land of rain and mud! Mud just doesn't compare!

This weather and my sprouted potatoes aren't helping the yearning either.

Ah yes, the smell of fresh dirt! Nothing like it. I've about worn out my seed catalogs and garden books the past week or so!! My husband seems to think they are glued to me!!!! And guess what I got in the mail yesterday? The book "Root Cellaring" I had ordered from Lehmans. Wow, what a good book and so much more information than I had thought it would have! Everyone should have it.

my dau got a 'memory book' for her dau. it had pages for relatives to fill in about favorite things. she had written on a piece of paper the ones she knew about me and checked with me for accuracy. she had left 'favorite smell' blank which surprized me and when I said, "humus [compost]" she exclaimed 'of course, I knew that!'
