I am going to redo my chicken house soon. I seem to remember an article a while ago about roosts that had a gentle slope that ran eggs to outside boxes. This way, it was easy to collect eggs and there was no chance of the chickens eating them. Anybody ever hear of this or tried it? Where to find plans would be great. Thanks, Joanie

Joanie, they are pulling your leg of course. Roosts are for setting and pooping on. Nest boxes or the like are for laying eggs. Now don't get mad if it was just a type-o and you already knew this! Sounds like a great article for countryside if you can get your idea to work! Vicki

You can buy nesting boxes that do this, and I believe there was an article in Country side in the last few years about this, but can't tell you which one. You might try looking through the poultry archives below.

We had chickens when I was little, and my dad built a coop for them complete with everything a chicken could want- the nesting box had a plastic latticed tray (used for flats of starter plants, I think) on the bottom. It was sloped slightly and one edge of it protuded from the coop wall. When the hens left after laying their egg, the egg would just roll out!
