A photo for Jay....

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A Country Singletree : One Thread

You asked to see another photo of my humble abode. Here's the best photo I could find, sorry that I'm in it! It is one-room, 16 x 24 feet, 11 windows, interior walls and ceiling are knotty pine T&G, exterior is cedar lapsiding. The floor joists are clear span 2by12s with 12 inches of insulation between joists. Vaulted ceilings with 12 inches of insulation between the trusses. The entire building is on 6x6 treated posts. The porch is 6 x 16 feet (wish it was 2 feet wider!) using 4x6 posts, beams and rafters. As you can see, the open gable roof extends out over the porch. I used T&G knotty pine on the portion of the roof deck which extends out over the deck. My place is off-the-grid, no running water, no bathroom. Aladdins for light, woodstove for heat, outhouse, hand pump for water, garden sprayer for indoor (and outdoor during summer) showers.

That is a sweet cabin. I am thinking of using the one room designs featured in Countryside last year for on the acreage I plan to buy. Can't handle being totally off grid so I'll keep this place here as the main house and the cabin as a place to go when my next wife doesn't want to look at me. (might build it on wheels in case I gotta leave fast :>). My last marriage taught me well.

When my kids are out, in a few years, I pulling this place down and building a cabin just big enough for me. I have a spot way back on the property under the eagle's nest overlooking a little cedar swamp. If and when the kids want to visit they can bring a tent or build a cabin of their own.

How's that for being a tough mama?

My son has a digital camera so I want to know, how do you put pictures on the forum? I think it is great to see where people are coming from and to have a visual. Is it easy enough for you to tell me here? I am sure others might be interested too, maybe we could make that it's own thread!

Thanks Cabin for any help you can give me.

Oh I get it....yust call me slow, by golly! For heavens sake, Hoot, I thought yew said "old" duffer, not "ole" duffer. By golly, I don't tink I know Ole Duffer....but I do know Ole Yawnson. Ole is married to Lena, dontchewknow. Ole's best friend is Sven Larson. And da two of dem hang around a lot down at da feedmill. We almost lost da tree of dem da udder day. Ya see, Ole, Lena and Sven were lost in the woods of Nordern Minnesoota and were becoming desperate having run out of food several days earlier. It vus vinter, da temp vus turdy degrees below, da snow vus deep, dare situation vus looking very bleak. Da tree of dem vus hungry, so Ole dug down into the snow to look for acorns. He found an oil lamp and upon rubbing it to get da snow off, a ge…geh…geh….a yeenie came out. Da yeenie says, "I am da great yeenie of Nordern Minnesooota, dontchewknow, and I can grant each of you vun vish." Ole says, "I vish I vas back on da farm." Poof, Ole vus gone. Lena quickly says, "I vish I vas back on da farm wit Ole." Poof, Lena vus gone. Sven vus sitting dare looking sad and da yeenie finally says, "Sven, vat is your vish?" and Sven says, "Gee, I'm really lonely. I vish Ole and Lena were here wit me". --Happy trails, Cabin Fever

Hoots right. That's a dandy looking cabin! You can see the workmanship even in the photo.

I'm an old married guy but found this place today & have enjoyed looking it over. Good job Jay.

Oh yeah almost forgot, loved the way you got the wording on the Ole and Lena joke, Cabin. I read it out loud to myself and laughed so hard the dogs came to make sure I was alright!
