This is a stupid question, but...What is language what the pope speaks at work?

Hi, Andy.
No question that you ask with sincerity and respect is stupid.
You have asked a very good question.

I believe that the pope speaks more than language each day, probably speaking the language most familiar to the person with whom he is speaking. I think that he speaks Italian more than any other language at this point in his life.

His housekeepers, his cook, and one of his closest aides are Polish people (nuns and a monsignor), so I'm sure that he speaks his native Polish language with them.
Many of his close co-workers (bishops, cardinals, etc.) who live within the Vatican are Italians, so he speaks Italian with them.
Others in the Curia are from Africa, the United States and Australia, so perhaps he speaks English (or Italian) with them. Others are French- or Spanish-speaking men, so perhaps he speaks their languages (or Italian) with them.

God bless you.
John
