Response to Wayside Gardens' Nesletter - APOCCCCCC!!!!!

You didn't have to yell so loud! (I read all the gardening threads!)

Yes, that is a great site.

I told hubby about my purchase, and he said "50 something bucks for flower???? What are you crazy?" When I explained to him that they will come back year after year, he calmed down and said OKAY. Not sure he'll like my next purchase... LOL

I am a non-gardener. I didn't even watch "Roots", a long multipart series on gardening was just out of the question for me. What little I know comes from observing my ex, a fanatical gardener.

Anyway, Peggy patronized a company which specialized in old rare plants. We had a mountain cabin, and she was growing a great many of these old plants on one of the few sunny areas on our place. One sad morning we found that during the night, a raccoon had dug every one of these plants up out of sheer curiosity. "Hm, here's another plant I don't recognize. I wonder what its root system looks like."

At least I learned a far amount as to which flowers are pretty shade tolerant. Impatience (sp?) for one. Also, she finally found a rose that grew well at our place, a pale pink variety called some name like "Prairie Maiden."

Those roses with "Prairie" in their names were, if I recall rightly, created by a Dr. Buck of Ames, Iowa, I think. They will stand the WORST of cold weather. Was it really a raccoon that dug up the plants? Wow! They don't bother mine, but the squirrels and chipmunks do, especially if they're freshly planted. So easy to dig down in that nice loose dirt, you see. It sometimes helps to cover the surface with pine bark nuggets, especially potted plants.

Wayside isn't cheap but they do have some plants you can't get anywhere else. For good native plants, try Niche Gardens. I know they're online somewhere. If you want to grow from seed, Park Seed is best, I think, but Thompson & Morgan will have you salivating. Also online somewhere.
