Didnt Caldwell go on loan to Hibs or what team was it? If so, did he play yesterday when Hibs played 1-1 vs Celtic?

How did he do?

That I can't tell you.

Yes, he played at CB against Hartson and Larsson - real baptism of fire!

I hadn't realised the game was on telly until after HT, but watched the final 35 minutes or so. During that period he did OK, in a purely defensive role that doesn't necessarily play to his overall strengths.

The replay of Celtic's goal showed Hartson being totally unmarked in the PA when he scored, but I couldn't tell which CB was at fault.

GC didn't look out of place in such exalted company in the bit I watched, and it will have done him the world of good.

Just remembered, I switched on my 4th match yesterday to catch the 2nd half of Tenerife v Barcelona - an embarrassingly one-sided game, with Barca hopelessly outclassing a team that included our own, our very own "The Steering Wheel" in midfield.

After 20 minutes he had literally touched the ball once, spent the rest of the time jogging gently back and forwards, until he was mercifully subbed.

Of course it could simply have been that none of his colleagues were good enough to read his subtle through balls! ;o{I

News of the World comments .....

MAN OF THE MATCH ..... Gary Caldwell, an outstanding debut from the young Sitling born defender who ha sfound it difficulty to make the breakthrough at Newcastle in recent seasosns. From the off the home fans could see their manager had acquired a player whose ability and toghness in the tackle was mathced by his reading of the game. He scarcely gave Larsson a sniff all afternoon. He's only at Easter Road on a short term load, but the pressure will be mounting for Frank Sauzee to make the move permanent if he continues this form.

Head to Head: Caldwell V Larsson ....On Loan defender Caldwell gave an assured display at he heart of the Hibs defence on his debut. Not only did he impress with his tigerish tackling and his ability to read the game, he also distributed the ball with precision. He kept Larsson quiet for almost the entire first half and although the Sweded managed to get more space as the game wore on Caldwell held the Hibs defence together for long periods, if he can keep this up Hibs will want to make him a permanent fixture

Sounds to me like he played okay !!!

The 3 juniors fast-tracked into training with the first team instead of with the stiffs by "that useless Dutch wanker" were Gary Caldwell, Shola Ameobi and Jamie McClen. I always thought he dropped a bollock with McClen but am less sure now (despite getting caught in posession for Bolton's first - Beardsley had that done to him several times so it's not a shooting offence). It was odd when YBR swapped the Caldwells back around with Steve moving up and Gary back down.....you'd almost think he muddled their names up ;-)

I read all the Scottish papers this morning and they are all gushing in praise of Gary Caldwell, the best line was the "Larsson will not have played against a harder centre half than Gary Caldwell".

Tentative opening 20 mins, settled down well in a Hibs team with 6 first teamers missing, reason he is there, Donald Park (ex Blackburn) now no 2 to Frank Sauzee at Hibs has been involved in the Caldwells career up thr the 16`s.19`s and under 21`s , Well done young Gary, *one paper states that Newcastle will be offering him a increased contract in the Summer
