Garage doors as building materials

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Just a thought for ya....i ran across a friend who does garage doors...as most of you know they come in sections...usually 8 foot by 21 inches.... ready made insulating panels...well its normally only the bottom one worn out but the top three are good...you can use these as ready made wall panels for a shed barn etc.... my friend has a garage door company and is changing out 111 doors in an apartment complex. so figure almosr 300 good panels to comeout of it...thats a lot of insulated siding..... lots of potential there so check out your local garage door companies...ya never know

There is an entire city in Mexico built of garage doors.

I use to work for a garage door company, and they would rather give the old ones to someone than have to pay to have them hauled away. Also, they are great for making fish houses.

My friend used garage doors for the siding and roofing for her goat barn, calf shed and the pig house. They used most of the doors whole for the sidding.

Jay,

Do you have any information on where in Mexico that town built out of recycled garage doors is? I'd like to visit it next time I get that way, if it is any where close to where I go in Mexico. thanks,

Doc, I'm curious. What type of garage door are you talking about the ones I'm familiar with are several sections on rollers and cant't be more than 18 inches tall each. What type are ya'll using and how would one go about building with them? This sounds like a great idea, but I need more info. P.S. I can't read books without pictures, hehehe.

construction using garage doors is fairly common in Mexico along the California border. Typical southern cali houses are fronted with 2 or 3 car garages so there's lots of them continually being replaced and most of the old ones go across the border. Hundreds, if not thosands per day I'm sure. Maclovio Rojas, 15 miles southest of Tijuana is one village where you'd see this.
