Come by /or/ Way to me???? (Working Dogs)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Which one is clockwise???? For the life of me I can't remember, which is which today, I was watching Animal Planet and it looked like the film was backwards but I just can't get my head strait now.

I'm thinking "come by" is the clockwise approach coming in from the field, and "way to me" is counter clockwise,???....oh,help my brain is numb......

I'm sorry about that, It must be the low carb diet, and the beef jerky had too much sugar,

Anyway, in herding trials the dogs are called by whistle, or by comands of "come BY" which I think is clock wise, from the top rotating from the top to the right (at 3 0'clock) from the caller, who would be at 6 o'clock. And I think the "way to Me" means rotate to the left, at 9 o'clock of the top, [which is basicly always at 12 o'clock from the caller].

I watched a livestock trial with a blue heeler, competeing against border collies, they worked sheep and cattle, and I just had a feeling that the calls didn't match the dogs moves, and I got confused. I like to watch the herding trials and after awhile you get a feeling for the calls and the movements.

Frankly, I paid more attention to my heeler, because HE was watching the TV, he has only done that twice before, once on a program that had a mountain lion, during a male/femail greeting encounter with no sounds that I could hear, he ran up to the TV and stood up to the screen noseing the speaker, ears pricked head cocked, and another time when dingos where barking, [which we thought was really funny] and now he has noticed cows.

It could be "Away to me" but when calling across a field, the "A" part doesn't stand out much.

Thanks everybody, I'm feeling better, and I'll learn to stay away from the sugar sooner or later.

It's all making sense, now, is it?

Come Bye is clockwise, Away to Me is counter-clockwise.

Come clockwise, Away wrong way, come clockwise, away wrong way. Get it.

Ohhhhhh! I truly didn't have a clue!

Cindy's got it. "Come By" the clock is how I keep it straight. It's a good thing my cattle dog, Howdy, knows the difference! LOL Sure is fun watching them work isn't it? Our last herding trial had a wonderful entry of many breeds. It was fascinating watching how different breeds handle the same commands. The dogs with the srongly bred behaviors like the Border Collies and Cattle dogs, versus the willing but different breeds like Rottweilers and Pit Bulls. Fun! LQ

I'm sorry I don't have an answer but I do have a question..I'm looking for any copy of Countryside Mag that had a border collie on the cover..I've not seen one but then I've only found out about this magazine yesterday ( sorry, I'm a city boy in Houston, texas . But I raise these great animals for a hobby and give then away to good homes. I collect any magazine that has them on it and I frame them and I have over 40 on my office wall
