This is the official list of words and letter combinations the state Department of Motor Vehicles forbids you from putting on your license plate.

Missing from the list are some of the more obviously offensive words and spellings - racial slurs, anatomical parts, the rougher insults in various languages, that sort of thing. You might still find some of these offensive, so beware.

Others are a tad more obscure. And there are untold variations out there that the DMV would undoubtedly balk at, even if they're not on the official list.

Answers

Way back when, when I was working for Informatics, I was told of an obscenity crisis which was overcome by the quick thinking of the top brass. There was a series of production reports with an ascending three letter identification, starting with AAA, AAB etc. It wasn't long before ASS was reached, causing glee among the rowdy males in the machine room, and I'm sure total mortification among the women there. Looking ahead, to the commotion that would be caused by DIC or FUK, the quick-reacting leadership banned vowels from the letter string.

A very close relative of mine has a license plate that says "HARD 8." She likes to gamble - and she also gets a lot of laughs! She's had the plate for 6 years now.

My adventure into gratuitous license plates was FERRUG. That's short for Ferruginous Hawk (having imprinted on one years ago). I did get a lot of honks on that one. Since I was limited to no more than 6 letters, my second choice was RUF-LEG, short for Rough-legged Hawk. That would have been just as provocative I suppose.
