To be recognized by the Feds you need to be at least 1/4. To be recognized by the Tribes at least here you have to have had an enrolled grandparent. I have a friend who is Chocktaw and is only about 1/32 but is recognized by his tribe. He qualifies for Indian health care. It would be a good thing for you to contact your tribe and find out what their requirements are. Indian health is not the best health care in the world but it is free. Some tribes give decendants hunting and fishing rights as well.

David,

Thanks so much. Guess if I want him recognized by the tribes, then I'll have to get his grandparents enrolled. It may be difficult on one, his father's mother, as she passed away many years ago.

My son would be 1/8th, at most, but no less than 1/16th. Even if I don't get him recognized, I can at least provide him the opportunities to learn about the culture.

Thank You,

apoc

Apoc, you can find all the forms you need at the Bureau of Indian Affairs website. You will need to trace your roots back a ways. It is a long process but is worth it for you and your family in the long run. Blessings, David
