Tyfon (where to get seed)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I was reading in one of my gardening encyclopedias about a green vegetable called Tyfon. Supposedly a cross between turnip and cabbage that is supposed to keep well into the winter in the garden. Has anyone heard of this/grow this? Any idea on where one could get seeds for it?

I just ran tyfon through google and the 11th listing is for a vegetable named brassica rapa, apparently the word is also the name of an aircraft and something to do with surfboards, apparently not to popular yet.

Tyfon is available from Pinetree seeds-- I think it's with the greens.I've never grown it before, just ordered a pack this year. It also used to be in Johnny's catalog; don't know if it still is.

One source of Tyfon/Holland greens seeds is Nichols Garden Nursery, www.nicholsgardennursery.com, used it as a crop for chickens and they seemed to like it.

Holland tyfon greens seeds are sold by Pinetree seeds. I got some last year and they're great. They produce large quantities of greens, then have a turnip root as well. I planted a 2 ft. x 4 ft. patch last year just to try them out and I will probably plant only a slightly larger patch this year (although I loved them) because they are so prolific. The greens are good both in salads and as wilted greens. I froze some as well in the same manner as spinach or kale, and they were great this winter. The greens were quite frost tolerant also, lasting into late November here in Maine.

Also, go to the "Older Messages" section here, into the "Kitchen (Food Preservation - Other)" category, and look for tyfon - it's about the second word in a thread title dealing with pickling tyfon root, and fairly close to the top of the list - first screen anyway.
