Boom for cod sperm cosmetics

A Norwegian biotech company said Thursday that it sees a booming business in providing cod sperm for use in cosmetics and chocolate.

Maritex, among the world's largest producers of cod liver oil, said it aimed to produce seven tons of processed cod sperm in 2002 for the international makeup market after pilot output in 2001.

"It neither smells nor tastes of anything," said Frank Hansen, a biotech engineer at Maritex, which believes it is the world's main producer of cod sperm for cosmetics.

The sperm is used to bind water in body lotions and make-up. "It is much better to make a water binder from a natural product than to concoct a chemical cocktail to do the same job," Hansen said.

He added that cod sperm extract was also used in medicines and breast milk substitutes. Processed cod sperm sells for around $200 a kilo (2.2 lbs), depending on its purity, Hansen said.

Fish liver can extend the shelf life of foodstuffs, but cod sperm has proven extremely versatile, also being used in chocolate and to treat salmon according to the fishery research center in Tromsų.

"The addition of proteins from cod 'milk' stimulates the immune system of salmon cells. We have seen the same effect on live salmon, and we believe the result can be tougher, more resistant salmon. Proteins from cod sperm can also be used in chocolate and cosmetics," said researcher Guro Pedersen to the newspaper Nordlys.

The researchers make use of a patented American method to make the most of fish by-products. Each year 145,000 tons of fish waste is dumped in the sea.

Thank God I never read Carl's posts. If I wasn't diabetic, I would be now.

So I guess before you buy your special lady a box of chocolates today, you better ask her if she swallows first.....

Listen, I've been hearing for years that chocolate contains rat hair, so *cod sperm* sounds a lot better to me.

I always thought that codswallop, the British term for bullshit, referred to codshit, but maybe it doesn't.

Barefoot,

Are you sure it is a peppermint creame center? I mean, have you actually tasted cod sperm?

-- Anonymous, February 15, 2002

If it's in chocolate, i've eaten it.

I was eating the ice cream and saw the web site on the carton.

Can you believe that price???

Barefoot,

Yes I can believe that price. I have purchased Godiva chocolates a few times for very special romantic nights. IMHO, they are not worth the money. I've tasted way better chocolates.
