How we homeschool--your favourite books

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

What are your favourite books for homeschooling? I am talking about resources that have helped you as a parent be a better homeschool teacher. You could also have a second category for children's books.

I'll list two. For me, "The Charlotte Mason Companion" by Karen Andreola. I have not actually read Charlotte Mason, but I really profited by Karen's writings.

For my children, we found "I Am a Home Schooler" by Julie Voetberg, at the library. It tells the day to day life of a real homeschooling family in Washington state. I appreciated the fact that the library had it on display, not just shelved with all the other books.

Of course, we have MANY favourite books; the ones I listed are not necessarily the most favourite. They just happened to be ones I was thinking about at the moment. If I listed all my favourite books, this post would be way too long, and I want to hear from the rest of you.

Any of the books by Raymond Moore, The Battle for the Mind by Tim Lahaye. This was back in the early days of the current homeschooling movement so there weren't nearly as many books out then but those where very good.

Two I have read recently:

Family Matters by David Guterson - thoughtful guy though he fails to consider all the ramifications of his pet idea Kingdom of Children by Mitchell Stevens - I took real issue with this book and the authors ideas on how to do research but it was thought provoking, if just to make me annoyed:)
