What do you like best about Countryside Magazine?????

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

For me the best part that I enjoy is the "How we made it to our Homestead" articles. They are truly and inspiratiion!!!

I think every issue should have at least two stories on how folks made it to their homestead.

I also really enjoy the comments that folks send in about different things. I always seem to learn alot from them.

Actually, there isn't much about Countryside that I don't like, except, the magazine isn't big enough!! ~Smile~ or else I just read to fast!!!~Smile~

Marsha:

Countryside is a reader-written publication for the most part. If they don't get in articles, such as you mentioned, they don't have them to publish. There are no writer's rules and they have published articles sent in using a pencil on grocery bag paper. Try to use generally acceptable English, but Anne-marie will do her magic with it.

The wide spectrum of information that is presented. The presentation has always been enjoyable, however the subject diversification of the last couple of years has really improved the magazine toward a forward looking reference tool, while being nostalgic just enough for interest without being stuffy and boring. The best way I have of describing my satisfaction is with my continued renewals.

Well, can't narrow it down to what I like best...I LOVE it all! Except...that it doesn't come monthly! I read through it so fast then have to wait 2 months for another. I've saved all my issues since I started getting them, since '95, with a few older ones thrown in. I go through them at least yearly, or whenever someone refers to an old issue, that I'm interested in.

Like Jay, I express my approval with my renewal; and also with gift subscriptions to like minded folk.(Aunt Susie may never forgive me if Unc does go ahead and buy that mule!)

I like the fact that the tone/cadence of the articles isn't all the same: even after Ann-Marie works her magic - and bless those folks with a grasp of punctuation and grammer! The format is both up to date and nostalgic. While Ken offers a lot of how-to information in his articles; there are also the folks who's enthusiasm shows through as they discuss how best not-to-do a certain thing! The wealth of experience and knowledge offered up by all the contributers is astounding - and it's amazing how often I've been pondering a certain question, only to pick up my newest issue of CS and find the answer. Most of all, I like the magazine because it's like sitting in at the local diner with a cup of coffee and listening to friends and neighbors talk. You can count on a smile when you read Countryside!

As Ken mentioned, Countryside is reader-written - and let me tell you from personal experience: there are few things in this life that can compare with seeing your name in the byline of an article in a national magazine!! I was dancing on air for weeks! All for a silly little story about acclimating my hubby to country life...(see, you don't even have to have any real SKILLS to write about!) So put your pen to grocery bag, or your fingers to the keyboard and send those articles in! We want to read about what YOU are doing!

I LOVE it all!!!!

Every bit of it . . . cover to cover. It is full of inspiring reader- written accounts of "real life" as it were!!!

It is inspirational, informative, etc.

Keep up the good work!!!! I'm hooked. (But, . . . like the others . . . the fact that it comes once every two months is a downfall for me!!!! I can't wait for each issue to arrive.!!!)

Ken, do you think if the amount of articles the readers submitted doubled, they would publish monthly?

-- Katie (homesteader@accessnevada.com), February 15, 2002.

Ooops, forgot to answer the original thread! I too probably rate the stories of how people got there as my favorite. Second would be the articles with pictures, it is so much better to see the buildings, and animals and so forth. And my favorite aritcles are the ones where they show you how to do something that is usually quite costly for much less, such as the cattle/hog panel storage buildings, which we created a wonderful greenhouse out of by the way for under 300.00. Certainly the longer articles by those such as Ken S. are really great, but I favor the ones in the front from people from all over.

I simply like the diversity it offers. I am also very proud that this magazine is written only 30 miles from where I was raised. Those folks in Northcentral Wisconsin (where this magazine is published)are truly down to earth, and being raised there, this magazine just fell open into my lap several years ago as though I just left home. Little did I know that I was a Homesteader. It's nice to know there's a name for our interests, dreams, and crazy ideas (to those who don't know which planet we've come from). C. Hello Marsha,

I have been a subscriber to Backwoods Home Magazine for a long time. I found myself reading it "too fast", so I thought that I would subscribe to CountrySide Magazine to fill in the gaps between issues of Backwoods Home. Well, it just did not work out that way! I figured I would get my issue of Backwoods Home one month and then the next month I would get my issue of CountrySide, and so on. Nooooo! They both come to my mail box usually at the same time! And I of course read them both TOO FAST and have to wait nearly two months before the new issues come out. Oh Well!

What I like about CountrySide is the variety of articles it has. I can usually relate to most of them with the experiences they share. Though not political in nature, I do find CountrySide refreshing and anticipate each and every issue as it arrives......along with Backwoods Home.

Sincerely,

Ernest

Wouldn't you know it, my lastest countryside mag arroved the same day the the spindle and wool, that I had bartered for on the new barter board, (don't forget to check that out). Then to top it all off my husband walks in with a new seed catalouge. What's a person to do!!!! I did finally get thru it all that night,(though I still can't seem to get the hang of that spindle). I love all of the magazine, and I can read it several times and see something new every time. Thanks so much for all the encouragement that the mag brings me. Susan N' Emily in Tn.

We like the homesteading articles of people who have made it. Just started subscribing after a long absence. Good changes in the articles. Would like to see more articles on shows of herding dogs, goat shows, etc. Went to a dog herding show this weekend. Was great to see the dogs work the stock. Tomorrow is the second day of weekend shows. Could these be advertised in the magazine from the different states and their clubs? Keep up the good work!

I love all the how we made it to the land articles..and the great things I have learned about animals and gardening...and frugal tips. I learn at least a couple things from each issue. It is the only magazine that I NEVER get rid of. I have every issue I have ever bought...at least 10 years worth. I have found myself digging through them to find a particular article I didn't need 7 years ago, but desperatly need right now. I will never tire of it. My favorite mail day is the one when my new issue comes. That was today!!!!!!!

-- Jenny (auntjenny6@aol.com), February 16, 2002.

Marsha, I agree with Polly....see page 70 of the current issue. I enjoy the whole magazine as well.I am working on a submission about moving to our homestaed/farm. I will try to complete it soon...the rest is up tp Anne-Marie

A special THANK YOU , to Ken, for helping me find the way to help others! Ralph
