I suspect you are thinking about UniBuilt homes. They are built in a factory using standard stick-built methods (they are not mobile homes). They are brought to the site and the sections transferred from a trailer to either a concrete slab, footers or basement walls by crane. The roofs come attached, but are hinged and then jacked up to join the connecting section. They allow quite a bit of flexibility. A friend near Clifton, OH has one. His contractor added on a large garage at one side and a three-story tower on the other. You wouldn't know it was factory built unless told. He is very, very pleased with the results.

If you would like to get in contact with Conrad for his first-hand experience, e-mail me and I'll pass your request on to him.
