Search for drought and rain resistant corn

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Countryside: With all the bad weather we've had in the past decade and maybe worse coming,if a severe drought or very wet weather happened a homesteaders corn crop could be wiped out. This would make it hard to feed his animals. Do you know of corn species around the world which are extremely resistant to drought, and others resistant to wet and mildew?

I know of one dry land species (Hopi purple) offered by Seeds of change PO box 15700 Santa Fe, NM. But I know of no rain resistant species Can you or any readers help me out?

Bert:

Basically would be two very different growing techniques. For dry land, you want to retain all of the moisture available. For wet land, you want to drain off excess to avoid waterlogged roots. Perhaps one would need to plant both ways and hope for a 50% crop. For example, use ridge planting for wet times and planting in the depression between rows for dry times.
