How many would be willing to contribute for a new site?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

O.K. guys, here's where the hard part comes up. How many of the forum users would be willing to contribute a small amount (probably 5.00-10.00)to get a new forum up and running? I've got a URL that we could use, www.thehomesteadjournal.com , and can get a site put together for us to use. The money thing comes in on buying the software to get a regular bulletin board that would eliminate a lot of the headaches that have gone on here. To see what I mean go to www.f2000.com and look at the forums there. With the BB you can block the ISP of people that repeatedly cause trouble, and the posts themselves would be segregated into clearly marked forums. I'm trying to do what I can to keep this forum going, but at the same time I don't want to be the only one trying to cover the costs. Eventually I think that small sponsorships, like the dripworks ad on countryside, would be able to cover the annual costs of hosting, URL and other expenses. I think this is a great site and would hate to see all the information here be lost. LMK what you guys think.

Answers

I'd be good for 3.00 a month or 30.00 a year.

-- Buddy in east Georgia (Buddybud@csranet.com), February 17, 2002.

I was thinking 5-10 for the whole year. The software itself is a little over 200 the last time I checked. I figured if even 40 of us could come up with 5 a piece, that would get the UBB and we could go from there.

Count me in! Dave.S

-- Dave.S (duckthis1@maqs.net), February 17, 2002.

With all the love and support i have recieved from this site in the , what one month , I ve been here, I would be stupid not to help. Put me down for $5.00 . Would love to give more, but hubby still has no job. I will hate to see this site go, hope we can save it.... Kristean

-- Kristean Thompson (pigalena_babe@yahoo.com), February 17, 2002.

I will commit for $5, or a share, up to $25.

-- Rick in Southwest WV (Rick_122@hotmail.com), February 17, 2002.

This forum has been so very good to me. I would gladly give $30.00 a year if it would keep it around. Heck .. it would cost me more than that to make phone calls, runs to the library, etc. just to get some of the info made available right here.

You go Nik..hope this helps a little.

Nik, check the price for the software and see if its around $200 still and I would be glad to pay for it.

Count me in...

-- laura (lauramleek@yahoo.com), February 17, 2002.

Lusenet is still free........what would be the need for a charge?? I am not sure why anyone who would take over the forum moderation task would want to leave here.

-- diane (gardiacaprines@yahoo.com), February 17, 2002.

Yea, I agree with Diane. To be honest, I'm not familiar with the program you all are suggesting, but this format on Lusenet is by far the most user friendly I've ever seen.

-- Annie (mistletoe6@earthlink.net), February 17, 2002.

Diane, A lot of the problems that have been seen on the board can be corrected with a regular bulletin board. This thread type of posting is hard to keep up with, there are no set topic sections, and a UBB would enable the moderator to block the ISPs of people who continue to cause trouble. If you want to check out what they can look like, go to www.infopop.com and look at the "ultimate bulletin board" section and you'll see how much nicer they are. Plus it being on it's own website would mean the ability to post pics, and to have a real time chat section. The site where I'm a mod on now recently took up a donation like I talked about here and put in a section where the people who had donated(sponsors) could go into the chat room. The main forum is still open to anybody, but the folks that helped pay for everything got a nice area where they can chat with other members. I think with all the knowledge on this forum, that a more interactive type of site would only help. This is just my two cents worth, I'm not trying to make anybody mad, I'm just trying to do my part to continue the forum and maybe make it better.

You folks might want to hold off before you start caughing up the dough - things are in the works for this forum to continue in some form, I'm sure. Stick around a while and see what happens. I am :8)

-- Pig Farmer Phil (pigfarmerphil@yahoo.com), February 17, 2002.

We like the ease of using this forum; don't know about the others. Count us in for $5 or more. Let us know soon.

-- Hank (hsnrs@att.net), February 18, 2002.

She is

A. Simply asking if anyone would be willing B. I thank you for watching out for my wallet, I am very capable though C. I doubt I would be willing to stay here, where we are obviously not wanted

-- Laura (lauramleek@yahoo.com), February 18, 2002.

I'll throw in $200.00 to help y'all out.

-- C.A. Cagney (Puttingood@carolina.rr.com), February 18, 2002.

Count me in. I've only been a countryside mag subscriber for a short time. Love this forum!! Posted a few times(about chickens). Been reading all I can about raising Boer goats and all this forums post about goats, along with everything else. I need you guys!! Reading about raising goats and actually doing it, I suspect will a bit different. In a few months I will have everything in place (barn built, fence up, supplies, ect) and buying my first pair of goats (more later). You all have been so helpful to me and so many others with all the valuable knowledge you possess. Thank-you! I'm praying it will continue here mostly, but anywhere will do as long as it does continue.

-- Pam (psanford@terraworld.net), February 18, 2002.

Chalk me up for $201.00

-- M.R. Biggins (mediawhore97@yahoo.com), February 18, 2002.

C. A., that's a more than generous offer. It really touches my heart to see people who are able taking the extra steps to help others. Although I have recently been laid off of my job, I was lucky enough to have the foresight to put a little away for hard times. This being the case, let me know where to send the money, and I'll match your $200 contribution, plus contribute another $50 in your name. God bless you.

-- M Allen Rogers (panther_mark@yahoo.com), February 18, 2002.

You've got my support, and $10. BTW, I think we owe a HUGE thank you to Ken/Dave. Bummer Ken...sorry it was such an inglorious and thankless task. P.S. If you can people, buy the magazine.

-- Jim NE KY (jedeweese@earthlink.net), February 18, 2002.

While I'm a bit confused as to the where and whats you have in mind, please count me in for a contribution. Mostly a lurker, but have learned so much from all you "pros"! Just let me know where and how much. As for yahoo....only as a last resort....am on a list- its a pain to deal with.

-- Sue (sulandherb@aol.com), February 18, 2002.

Sounds good to me,one idea alone is worth alot more than 10 bucks!

-- Gary (burnett_gary@msn.com), February 18, 2002.

I'll contribute time, money, blood, my firstborn child----you name it! I'm embarrassed to admit I visit the forum about 5 times a day, since I'm working on the computer a lot anyway. I just can't imagine not having the forum, or something just like it. Glad to see that I'm not the only one who is obsessive about it!

-- Shannon at Grateful Acres Animal Sanctuary (gratacres@aol.com), February 18, 2002.

Count me in, too! I get a lot of good reading from this forum. It would be terrible to lose the archives!

-- Jennifer L. (Northern NYS) (jlance@nospammail.com), February 18, 2002.

I'd be willing to contribute also.

Stacy in NY

-- Stacy (KincoraFarm@aol.com), February 18, 2002.

Nik, Which site are you the moderator? Is it the homestead site you are raising money for?

-- cowgirline in OK (cowgirlone47@hotmail.com), February 18, 2002.

I don't know where or what lusenet is, but whereever you go plz take me too! i love this forum and have learned much

-- Susan (dsowen@tds.net), February 18, 2002.

I can maintain a little bit, but please do not exspect any one to stay around if pop ups start.

-- mitch hearn (moopups@citlink.net), February 18, 2002.

Susan, go to the top of your page and click on Lusenet. This will take you to a list of several forums. Try Cooking and Crafts or Country Familys. These were started by Countryside members. Several of us post over there too! Best wishes!

-- cowgirlone in OK (cowgirlone47@hotmail.com), February 18, 2002.

Count me in for a donation, too. Many thanks to those willing to find a way to save this forum- it's been so helpful to so many of us, and I for one would hate to lose it.

-- Kristin, in La. (sevenstonestile@earthlink.net), February 18, 2002.

I just discovered this forum last week, and think it's great! I would be happy to make a $10 contribution. Wish it could be more but the company I work for is closing. Please try to do without the popup ads - they are SO annoying!

-- Debbie (debbie@msi-soft.com), February 18, 2002.

Count me in! I will pay to keep a similar forum going.

-- bluetick (coonhound@mindspring.com), February 18, 2002.

Count me in, Nik

-- Debbie in MO (risingwind@socket.net), February 18, 2002.

I love the UBB format. It is SO EASY to use. Keep us posted if this pans out.

-- Anne (Healthytouch101@wildmail.com), February 18, 2002.

I prefer Lusenet also, but if ya gotta, ya gotta (both hands up for donations).

-- Soni (thomkilroy@hotmail.com), February 18, 2002.

I don't want to lose all the knowledgeable people that are on this forum. Whatever is decided I will go along with even if it cost. This forum is worth paying for. My sweet baby goat would be dead from pneumonia if not for this forum. You guys have given so much information that I never could have found on my own. Just let me know what you're going to do.

-- Sheila (nannie@intrstar.net), February 18, 2002.

Who do I write the check to? Just let me know.

-- Bonnie Norris (queqid@att.net), February 19, 2002.

I only offered to set-up a new site for us to save all the archives, and have a little bit nicer forum to communicate on. But since it looks like they are going to stay here, then there really is no need. I wish Chuck the best and if there is anything I can do, just let me know.
