Living Spring Basket

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I saw this in a catalog and thought it would interest some other folks here.

It was a large, flat-bottomed wicker basket with a plastic lining. It had a thin layer of soil and then wheat was planted to make beautiful grass. They recommended to allow 8-10 days for growth before you wanted to use it. I thought it would make a lovely display basket for homemade goodies in the Spring or at the Farmers' Market.

Oats work very well too! I have been growing flats of oats in my Conservatory all this winter as food for the gp's and rabbit. It looks great to look out there and see fresh green 'grass' growing when it's all snow, ice, and slush outside yet.

Aside from just looking nice, this would look great with Easter Eggs in it, hm?

This sounds really neat. And it would probably be something that I could actually grow!! With few crocuses planted in the grass, it would make a great centerpiece for the Easter dinner table! Question...how do I keep my 10 housecats away from it??

Marcia -- start some pots of sprouts going ahead of time and give it to the cats until they're not interested anymore...er, well, given the nature of cats, at least until they're not so eager to claw your centerpiece off the table is closer to the mark.

I'll try that, Julie....but my cats are always looking for greenery to demolish. Only my African violets and jade plants are safe!!

BTW...speaking of plants, remember awhile back I was wondering how to keep some geraniums alive through the winter? I've been keeping them in my cellar close to a northern exposure glass door and they're still alive!!! Just starting to produce some vigorous new leaves. I can't believe they didn't die!
