My silkie hen has been acting really wierd lately. She Just sits around on her side. She is eating and moving around, but there is something wrond with her. She seems to waddle a little bit and has whitish stuff comming out of her vent. (butt) Do you know what is wrong with her? If so, what are the treatments of it? Thanks a bunch. Kelli

Does it look like egg white? Is she egg bound?

I think she broke an egg inside. Ralph

Kelli, I am sorry about your hen. In your shoes(everyone knows what's coming here, LOL ) I would post a quick question on www.poultryconnection.com There are many experts there who can guide you as well as links to Poultry Vets. Please come back and let us know how she does. LQ

Has she been vacinated for Mereks? my hens several years ago suffered from this, I made the mistake of nursing them through it, and so infected the rest of the flock! mereks they tend to dying with head twisted toward back. We were lucky to be only a few miles from Extention service and they would examine our 4-H birds for free.

Also, I have taking a $40 chick to the vet when the hock joint broke. Got spendy, and still had to put it down, never walked right. But the vet is always an option!!

This web site by Oklahoma State Univ: http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/exten/poultry/f-8300.pdf, is a brief 2 page pdf file that lists common poultry diseases. It may help.
