I am an oikologist

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Mitch's googlewhacking post has got me digging into the dictionary for unusual words, words I never heard of. In the process, I found this word:

oikology: the science of household management

Now I have something interesting to write on all those applications that ask for "occupation"!

And here I was thinking you went and bought a pig!!!

I also hesitated when I first saw the word and the eye wanted to insert an "n" after the first two letters. But then my Greek studies kicked in: "oikos" means house, "logos" means "word," used to suggest the study or science of something.

Love it!! When I used to work (like I don't now?) for housewives, I'd fill in "domestic engineer". The women loved it and it drove the bean counters in our business nuts. So, I'm an oikologist. Wow!

Oh Melissa, we think alike. I thought she got a pig too!!!

I'm another who at first thought Cathy was talking about pigs, lol. The next time I have to fill out one of those stupid forms that ask my occupation, I'm going to put down oikologist. However, I do have pigs, so the next time I'm discussing them with someone, I think I'll tell them I'm an OINKologist.

I told my hubby that I had a new profession and what was the first thing out of his mouth? "You study pigs?!"
