Trouble with heat pump--please help!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi AGAIN. It seems as though I've been on a LONG bad luck binge.

We noticed that our 13 y/o heat pump fan won't come on and the breaker cuts off when we cut the regular heat on. We have auxillary heat, but no heat is emitted with the "regular" heat.

Are we doing something wrong, or is the heat pump out for good?

Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks again,

Bad luck in NC

If the breaker goes off often it can wear out and needs to be replaced. If thats not the case, look for a reset button, next check the contact points for burnt surfaces. Next check would be to establish that power is getting to the unit with a simple hand held circuit testor. Is there a burnt smell around any of the air handleing motor? What type fuel does it use, gas, oil, electric? Mention the brand, type of fuel, model number so we can pinpoint it.

I know Doug Rye is a big proponent of heat pumps. I attended one of his seminars last fall. Very informative and helpful. You can visit his website at http://dougrye.com, or call him at 501-455-2305 or 1-888-doug-rye. I hope he is able to help. John.

You mention the "Fan" does not come on..which may be your problem. Without the fan, the unit will not operate. Fans need oiling every couple of years or they will cause problems. Most have a couple of holes covered with plastic "pegs" which you remove and oil..place pegs back to keep dirt out. If the fan is out...replacement is not an expensive item. I suppose you speak of the outdoor fan or are you speaking indoor coil fan? The indoor fan should be able to run separately from the unit..fan only. Outdoor fan will come on with the compressor. I don't think it's the heatpump, just a component.

I hope this helps...good luck.
