My sister thinks her little boy might have Tourette's Syndrome. Before she embarks on drug treatment, are there any naturopathic/homeopathic treatments for this condition?

Hi Christina,

I just started working with the special ed teacher at our local school and I work with a little guy with Tourette's Syndrome. My advice would be to please get the little boy diagnosed before doing anything. There are lots of behaviors which one might attribute to Tourette's which are not. I understand completely her desire to try alternative treatments. I know of one company that manufactures a herbal remedy for ticks. I'm sure the medical profession would completely debunk it but if you want to contact me privately I can find the information for you.

I also would like to suggest a book which I myself have just read called "Children with Tourette Syndrome, A Parents Guide". by Tracy Hearle. I found it helped me understanding quite a lot about the disease as well as gave some positive testimonies from adults with Tourette's.

I think one of the hardest thing about Tourette's is finding people to talk to about it. Wishing your sister all the best. Kim

There is a possibility that it is an allergy reaction. I knew some who had a child that blinked hard. Once the child was taken off milk, he no longer had a problem.

A good book of reference is, Is This Your Child? by Dr Doris Rapp. It said, "...most physicians do not believe that allergy is in any way related to TS." and "..when some children's allergic symptoms respond favorably to allergy treatment, their manifestations of TS are also simultaneously relieved."

Just another idea. If the parents have problems with allergies, the child usually does too.

Allergies, yes. Immunizations, yes. For homeopathy, you need a good homeopathist. Period. There is no rememdy just for "tourettes". You really need to look at the whole picture and whole person to get a clear picture. if she is interested, I could maybe help her find one.

We have a Grandson with this disorder of TS. Please !! have the child examined by a doctor that is knowledgeable in this !! Some don't understand it. Possible that your child has a "tic" that he or she will outgrow...TS you don't usually. I don't know if our 15 year old will though. Some days are worse for him with his "tics' than others and what is happening in his life has a lot to do with it also. He has went through some tough times at school with the kids and it has been hard on him but he is doing better. A hard way for a child to understand why people act towards others the way they do. He is now of medication...has been since 6 years old. Have changed medications over the years as his body seems to get use to the kind of meds and the dosage. I personnaly never have looked into the homeopthic treatments if there is any.. Please educate yourself on this disorder and then seek medical advice. If it is...he and you will learn how to deal with it...Good Luck !!!

Christina, It is imperative that the boy be accurately diagnosed. Most family Doctors , no matter how well meaning, have much experience with this. He will need the services of a neuroligst and a neuropychologist who specializes in TS. Don't let anyone say different, four of our five children have Tourettes. Most people are concerned with or know of it because of the tics. Believe me, they are only the tip of the iceberg. This is a very complex condition. In response to Kim who is working with a student with TS, I strongly recommend the book "Teaching The Tiger" By Marilyn P. Dornbush and Sheryl K. Pruitt. It should be required reading for all educators. There are numerous support groups and organizations to help with the hurdles and supply REAL information. My wife sits on the board of one of them. I'll have her also respond. Take care.

We have tried numerous treatments to alleviate the symptoms of TS. We've done vitamin therapy, chiropracter, diet changes ,as well as conventional meds. As john said, the tic's are a minor prblem compared to the disorders that come with it. Most people don't have any understanding of tourette's and how it can complicate life. We had never even heard of it, now are becoming expert.(may I add, against our will) It is important to get diagnosis before doing anything else. If it's a matter of simple tics, it might well not be t.s. there is such a thing as transient tic disorders. A diagnosis of tourette 's is based on the patient meeting a criteria that includes multiple simple tics(eye blinking, head tossing, neck stretching the most common) and vocal tics(ex. sniffling, clearing throat, whining sounds) These have to be evident for a year or more and start before a certain age, also tic's wax and wane, they seem to be in cycles, you just get used to one and then it goes away and is replaced by something else. Never a dull moment in the t.s. world. Would be glad to pass on links to anyone who has been touched by tourette's, or the wonderful things that come w/ it,ie.adhd, ocd, audio processing disorder, depression, anxiety etc. A tough load for a child to bear in this day and age.

Thanks for all the responses and info. My sister is in the process of moving to another state, so once she is settled, she will proceed with diagnose. Her little boy has several types of odd behaviours, not just the tics. We hope things work out for the little guy.

I have a 14yr old son with TS. Yes, the tics are only the tip of the iceberg in many cases. Curiously, do any of your children with TS have problems with handwriting, too slow, only printing? If so, what is the diagnosis of it? Susan
