Remarriage-Do I have to get an anulment?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

I have recently been divorced and found a man that I know in my heart is the one. I am Christian and he is Catholic. We visited his Priest, and he informed me that I would have to get an annulment. I don't understand because in my previous marriage neither one of us were Catholic and we did not get married in a Catholic church. I thought that was if you were married in a Catholic church or were married within the Catholic religion.

Sara, the Catholic Church recognizes non-Catholic marriages between non-Catholics as valid. There might have been reasons your first marriage was invalid, reasons which a priest or the folks at the marriage tribunal will have to explain to you.

If a Christian married a non-baptized Hindu then the two would perhaps not be validly married. I am guessing.

Mike,
Even that kind of marriage would be presumed by the Church to be valid (until proved otherwise). It would not, however, be a sacramental marriage.

Sara, you stated: "I am Christian and he is Catholic."
I just wanted to let you know that Catholics are Christians too. In fact, we are the original Christians.
