greenhouse heat

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have a 6'x32' fiberglass greenhouse, It is expensive to heat with electricity, so I put a Franco Belge oil burning stove in it( because I had one). It heats good but it smells a little, will the CO affect the plants.

you will need a vent of some kind,, even without the heater,, so I dont think it will be a problem

Hi, I heat my greenhouse with kero- the plants thrive on the co2,just make sure you have it vented.

I heated with kero when I first put up my grenhouse and had no problem with bedding plants. I did have a fresh air vent that was piped in right beside it. I would caution that ethylene in the combustible fuels will affect flowering plants. I now grow cut flowers and have an oil burner with a chimney pipe. Ethylene shortens the life of the flowers, naturally makes them "ripen". Same effect you get storing flowers with apples etc. So it depends on what you are growing.

You're right, carbon monoxide and other combustion by-products *are* a problem, so the fumes must be vented to the outside.
