Trackage S.W of Denmark, SC

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

While passing through Denmark, SC this week, I noticed tracks running off of the old SAL main to the S.W. In an attempt to follow these tracks,I passed a lumber mill perhaps a mile out of town. At the mill grade crossing,I could see the tracks running a couple of miles with a siding to the left containing some type of log cars. One of my older maps shows this to be SCL trackage from Sumter to Barnwell-then joining the SCL (Agusta to Yemassee via Fairfax) in the Savannah River Plant. How much of this track is still in use/or in place ? Many thanks for any info. See you in Jax ! Bob

Bob, the trackage you mentioned was the extension of the line of road of the Wilmington, Manchester and Augusta which connected with the Charleston & western Carolina at Robbins, S.C. It was scrapped shortly after C.S.X became a reality.
