Tribal members to discuss traditions

Compiled from wire services

The history, culture and traditions of area tribes from the point of view of tribal members in the Inland Northwest will be the focus of several workshops starting this weekend.

"Voices of Your Tribal Neighbors: Beyond Myths and Misunderstandings" will be held in the Eric A. Johnston Memorial Auditorium at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture.

Although the workshops are designed for teachers, they're open to the public. The registration fee is $20.

Sponsored by the museum and the Gonzaga Institute for Action Against Hate, the workshops will feature panel discussions, local tribal guest speakers and hands-on activities. The sessions are designed to encourage teachers to teach a classroom unit on local Indian history, culture and traditions in conjunction with taking students on tour of the MAC exhibit "Peoples of the Rivers: Lifeways of the Northern Plateau." Teaching packets will be provided.

The workshops are scheduled on Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and on March 7, 14 and 21 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
