New Member Nominations

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Dear Folks,

I feel that we need to chose some new members. I feel that we need to increase our number of active posters, as our pool seems to be dwindling. With the rumors of Lusenet going down for the count, I think it's time to skim the cream - before the bucket disappears! We can't take 'em with us if we ain't got 'em to begin with!

I think that it might work best to have a separate thread for each nominee; that way it will be easy to avoid confusion about who we're talking about; and also make it easier for our beloved and benevolent dictator (do I suck up well, or not?!) to delete the thread later. If anyone else would like to nominate a new member, would you please start a new thread with their name in the title?

I have entered a post nominating a new member to test the waters. Any comments regading the new member should be posted to her specific thread. Any comments about the nominating process can be posted to this thread, so that we can keep the ideas when the nomination threads are deleted.

Is this okay with everyone? Any suggestions?

Ok, but what are WE going to do when Lusenet starts a new policy? Well, I do guess it depends on the policy. I couldn't get into the EZBoard site the other day either. What exactly is the alternate address? Thanks.

Good ideas, Polly!

Link to the forum (I hope) Where the Sidewalks End

EM's link takes you one page farther in, but I linked to the start page so that you can have that bookmarked. In the future, I may add other forums. Right now all I have is General Chat, because it's only a back up. But if we ever moved there "permanently", I would set up other forums/categories.

Looking for opinions on how long we should have for evaluating/commenting on nominations for new members. I posted over on the thread about Susan that I'm only waiting until tomorrow evening on her nomination. But that is because her name came up before, and we've all had plenty of time to think about her. What about other "new members"? A week? Less? More?

I dunno. Seems like a week ought'a be enuf for everyones voice to be heard. Do we need unanimous approval or is a strong majority enuf?

We have approximately 45 members on the board, according to my data; which is somewhat old and has had new members names penciled in. Only 25 of those persons have posted recently; some of the 45 have not posted in months. In order to have a majority of the active members; a new member would need 13 aye votes. Or were you referring to only a majority of aye votes among the respondants? In any case; I also think a week should be long enough to keep people hanging. Does anyone else have any suggestions on the new member selection process?

what Polly said........any one who regularly participates usually shows up sometime within a week. Besides, MOST of the time we all agree that the only ones we really want to keep out are the trouble causers.

I'm not thinking of anything so formal as counting a majority. I feel that if seven or eight people are in favor of the new person, and no one has any strong objections, that's good enough. I guess if someone has some concerns but not yet strong objections, we could allow more time for discussion or searching out previous posts, whatever. In general, I think that if ONE person has strong objections about any particular individual "up for membership", that is probably enough to keep them out. But that would probably depend on the circumstances too -- not a hard and fast rule, IMO. And I guess I would be the ultimate determinator [?] of whether the objections were well founded or baseless. I guess that would mean putting on my judges robes and resisting the rush of power to my head . . . ;-)

I'm also thinking that, during the (roughly) seven days of consideration of an individual, we shouldn't have anyone else being considered. Or maybe no more than two at a time? Any thoughts?

A week for nomination voting sounds like enough to me, and I will most willingly bow to "The Honorable Judge Joy" as the final determining vote caster/vetoer in the event of membership indecision.

I'm in agreement with one week of consideration, also. Even though we (we who post!) are a rather small group, the majority post of us do post within a week or so. Seven days is plenty of time to discuss new members. I think that two new members at a time within that week is enough....I guess!
