Chicks - We Got CHICKS!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Style Homesteading : One Thread

Yep - we got little cheepers here in the basement! Heartland Hatchery is about an hour from us. My DW learned that they were having a sale on chicks (half price) so we got 54 Aruracana, 25 New Hampshire Reds and 25 Barred Rock chicks. We currently have around 150 adult chickens that are all mixed up and wanted to get several purebred lines started. Looks like we're on the way :8)!

Oh ... and we have 5 doz Rhode Island Red eggs in the incubator and about another 4 doz eggs of our mixed Black Austrolorp in another incubator. That's not to mention the 300 eggs we'll be having a friend to hatch out for us in her big incubator sometime in March. As you can imagine, we never have to worry about scraps going to waste around here. If the cats, dogs, hogs, ducks, guineas, or rabbits won't eat it, the chickens will! We sure have fun!

Phil, Where is Heartland Hatchery?? I live in southeast Kansas and did not know there was a hatchery in the state. there used to be one in Cherryvale but that was years ago. I would love to get some half price chicks too. thanks a lot

Karen - Heartland Hatchery is in Amsterdam, MO - just east of LaCygne, KS, which is east of us a little ways. Here's their website address - http://www.heartlandhatchery.com/

Hope that helps!
