Thoughts about this forum!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

YOu know, I've been thinking about this subject while dusting. Dusting is pretty mindless! Cathy, I believe, posted about this subject. The forum might be a wee bit quiet, but that's normal in any forum, or conversation, for that matter. Right now, I'm quiet because I have family and health matters on my mind. I think all forums go through times like that. It will bounce back!

Why are people getting the idea this forum is slow? I think it's always pretty busy. :) One of the things I like about it is that there are always a multitude of interesting topics, from Mitch's stumpers (which I rarely get, but work on anyhow) to the usual chicken and gardening questions. Check out some other forums if you want to see slow! Some don't have more than one or two posts per week.

I hope you are feeling better Ardie.

Thanks to everyone for your input!

I love this forum - it's a wonderful stress reliever when I think I've had it!

P.S. You can come do my dusting when you're finished Ardie - I'll even feed you a good ten bean soup with cornbread for supper and brownies to finish!

Ten bean soup will probably cure whatever ails me. But, it may make me have to live outside for a bit!

Seriously, all conversations have lulls!

Ardie, I love your sense of humor!

I agree with Ardie and Cathy's perspectives on the forums. All forums have lulls, this one is so busy I guess I hardly notice when there's been a lull! Cathy is definately right on target regarding forums being what you make them. I believe it takes 3 main components to make a good forum: An attractive, easy to use layout. (Lusenet is great...when it's not down.) A great moderator (Melissa fits that description). And people who are willing to put time and effort into the questions and answers (that's all of the rest of you!).

That's why Country Families is so successful.

Ardie: Can you tell us all ten beans in the soup? I thought I was doing good with three or four! I'm really curious.

-- Katie (homesteader@accessnevada.com), February 28, 2002.

You'll have to ask Christine!

This has quickly become my FAVORITE forum. I've read and posted on CS (and others) for about a year now, but not being a goat/sheep/cow/horse person (I am a chicken person, however), I find this forum offers so much more of what I'm personally interested in.

I really enjoy reading how others are saving money on groceries, utilities, etc., and like to think there are times when I have something to offer as well.

The other thing I enjoy so much here is the upbeat attitudes I see expressed here. I think Melissa is doing a terrific job and can almost feel like we're all sitting around the kitchen table enjoying tea, muffins and great conservation. Keep up the great job.

Wishing you enough.

Dianne,

I feel the same way, like we are sitting around the kitchen table visiting. :) I also learn a lot on this forum and I enjoy the wide variety of topics. Being a livestock/outdoorsy type person, I never pass up the chance to read any animal posts, but I also appreciate all the other info. And I firmly believe everyone has something worthwhile to pass along to others. Sometimes some of the smallest tidbits of information or just an offhand comment from someone has had a profound impact on my life.

And yes, Melissa is doing a great job!

Okay, here goes. I went into the store and bought the ten different varieties of beans they had, a one pound bag of each, took them home, dumped them into a BIG bowl, and mixed them all up. Then I took quart jars, filled them, put a lid with a little fabric circle thingy on it to make it look cute, attached a recipe and gave it to all the kids' teachers for Christmas presents with a brownie mix in a jar, and a box of jiffy-mix cornbread.

Forgive me if I don't get all ten beans by memory, it's been three months! navy beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, blackeyed peas, baby lima beans, split peas, lentils, black beans, great northern beans...

Okay, I give up, we'll settle for nine bean soup this time, I can't remember the tenth one! The recipe says to divide and save half for later - you will have to decide how "beany" you want it, and if you use the entire quart jar you will probably need to add more water.

Soak them overnight, then boil them in 2 quarts of water with one pound of meat (ham, smoked sausage, whatever), one large chopped onion, two minced cloves of garlic, 1/4 bell pepper chopped, 2 stalks of sliced celery, 1/2 teaspoon of thyme, 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, 1 bay leaf, salt and pepper to taste. 1/2 hour before serving, add 2 cups of canned chopped tomatoes.

I haven't played with the recipe much, but I will probably add more spices when I do it next time. (can you tell I don't follow recipes very well?)

Christine--being a vegetarain-- I leave out the meat of coarse---& I use more herbs & spicey tomatoes---& more spices!!! Of coarse I cook by dump & taste---as you can tell--- I have done the same as you & bought the beans & mixed them/ & put them in jars-- & have them on hand & I also use them with other homemade things in a basket when I need a quick gift---

Just last night I made one of the best bean recipes ever. It's a vegetarian recipe. Sonda I bet you'll love it. I'll post it when I ahve more time. OH, I had 16 kinds of beans at one time. But there are 100's of them. We really like them
