Today, February 28, we members of the Catholic Church family honor, in a special way, the following friends of God -- saints whose souls are now in heaven:

Bl. Antonia of Florence (Italian, mother, widow twice, Franciscan tertiaries' prioress, d. 1472)
St. Ermine (Irish?, 6th century)
Pope St. Gregory II (Roman, Vatican treasurer and librarian, elected to papacy in 715, reigned until death in 731)
St. Hedwig (Hungarian, princess, queen of Poland, died giving birth before age 30 in 1399)
Pope St. Hilary (Sardinian [Italian], papal legate, elected to papacy in 461, reigned until death in 468)
St. Oswald (Danish born in England, Benedictine monk, archbishop, theologian, daily washed feet of 12 poor people, d. 992)
St. Proterus (Egyptian, patriarch of Alexandria, martyred by stabbing in 457)
St. Romanus of Condat (French, monk, hermit, priest, healer, c. 460)

If you have anything to share about these holy people, please reply now -- biographical episodes, prayers through their intercession, the fact that one is your patron saint -- whatever moves you. If you are interested in one of these saints and want to find out more about him/her, please ask. Information is sometimes available on the Internet.

All you holy men and women, saints of God, pray for us.
God bless you.
John

Some schismatic bodies (and the less than 1% of Catholics who use a special permission to follow an older liturgical calendar) remember St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows on this day. But almost all Catholics of the Latin Church commemorate St. Gabriel on February 27 instead.

St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, Ora pro nobis.

"His cult was confirmed to local calendars in 1969."

Bloddy Dark-Ages schismatics....

"Confined," not "confirmed."

Neither one mean "forbidden," however.
