I've actually been working, like in job

You've probably seen me mention the second-hand shop so beloved of the Hungarian and me--Everything But Grannie's Panties. Obviously, as often as we go there we're on a first name basis with the owner and staff. Well, the owner, Kim, had to clear the estate of a woman who committed suicide--she was a manic-depressive. A rich manic-depressive. Never mind all the straw hats, boxed dolls and purses the woman owned, there was $150,000 worth of jewelry, most of it costume. Some of the stuff was really good, as in the diamond bow pin Kim was wearing, with a tag of $13,000 (and that was CHEAP). This is the kind of thing the Queen would wear on her coat.

We sold $3,000 worth of jewelry in four hours tonight, the most expensive item being a $150 ring. I had already spent time since Sunday calling people, so I had a bit of credit built up. You know it didn't take long to spend it, including $60 on a longish string of large cultured pearls. I also bought twisted strands of freshwater pearls, a helluva ring (fake pave diamonds with two pave "sapphire" hearts), some pearls on invisible thread (you know, "floating" pearls), a little silver and pearl necklace and a silver chain and dollar-sized thingie encrusted with marcasite, vaguely Persian in design, which is also a pin. The prettiest stuff I've ever owned, I'm just thrilled.

As I was leaving and saying I would see Kim tomorrow to try to flog some of what's left, she said, "Oh, by the way, I came across another small box of stuff. . ." I can't wait to see what's in it and spend whatever I earn tomorrow.

Jim has been asked to stay on at work until at least the end of next week and spend it in Houston finishing up a contract. I've stashed away a good bit of change so that barring a severe emergency, we'll be okay for several months, including health insurance, plus we'll have a nice chunk back from income tax.

So we're doing okay and the cats are too. Just wish there were more hours in the day.

I'd love to see some pictures of the treasures you scarfed up. Be a good idea for insurance purposes, too.

Got film?

Old Git,

Wish I could find a job like that! :)

What finds you had. I agree with Barefoot, and say that pics are in order. Too bad I don't live in NC anymore.

Myself, I have been swamped! I'm leaving town for a week and when I return I'll have cpu/memory upgrades to three machines on a Saturday. The week that I'm gone, I'm expecting 30 sun machines to be delivered. I'll be busy getting those installed and configured for the next little bit.

Wanna trade jobs for a while?

Good idea on the pics! The scanner is busted but whenever Sweetie gets another job, we'd like to get a printer/scanner, so hold on.

This jewelry job, although temporary, is a delight. I hope it leads to other such sporadic, temporary things with Kim, and it very well could. She's in her 11th year of business and has built up a really good reputation. No way I can do a regular job but this flexible spur-of-the-moment stuff is feasible. Yep, I'm still in bed, sucking on ibuprofen and elevating legs and feet, but that can happen after a few hours on the yard too.

Apoc, sounds as if you're going to be VERY busy for a while. Vegas, huh? Wow! Not exactly the midwest, is it? Snort!

Old Git,

You take the pictures and send them to me. I'll scan them and send them back to you on a CD. I'll either post them or allow you to post them. Either way, you'll get the pictures back.

Cool beans!

I wondered where you had gotten off to, OG. Getting into mischief, as usual. (;

Sounds like you found a great occasional gig.

I'll send the acupuncturist over to fix you right up! (:

Another busy day and found some more pretties to buy, lol! More work tomorrow too. Thanks for offer, apoc, will get a round tuit, really I will.

Have had quite a bit of fun, haranguing people--"You're not buying enough! For God's sake, buy some more so I don't have to help inventory this crap!" "Never mind a paper bag, how about a cardboard box to put this stuff in--you're going to buy more, aren't you?" "Well, yes, it's a little big, but let them wonder if it's real or not. If they don't question it's authenticity, it's not big enough."

The first night, Elizabeth knocking on the window, asking how to get in. "You come down the bloody chimney, you little troll!!!"

"Is that a diamond? A diamond? For seventeen-fifty? Oh, yes, it's a bloody diamond all right and I've got a lovely Colombian emerald over here for twelve-fifty."

Luckily, Kim has a good sense of humor.
