Quote of the day:

"But to the conservative press, intellectual consistency is for, well, intellectuals. What's more important is to stiffen the resolve of GOP lawmakers to fight the Manichaean battle against liberalism. If the mainstream papers want to undermine the will of Democrats with a lot of high-minded consistency, that's their business. Let 'em get medals for fair play. We'll get the federal judiciary."

-Paul Glastris, The Washington Monthly

W reacts to Lucianne.com Must Reads of the Day.

They Won't Dance, Don't Axe Them: Charles Krauthammer brilliantly skewers those who took to their fainting couches over W's Axis of Evil concept. His take on Clinton's missiles-up-a-camel's-butt-policy is worth having needle-pointed .

Monica in Gack and White: The ever resourceful Igor, our staff Mr. Fix-it, arranged for us to preview Monica Lewinsky's HBO Sunday night show. It's worth a longish look for what it says about the "man she loved." The hour plus of Monica's drama queening, petulance, fighting a losing battle with her burka-like blanket of hair and occasional genuine anguish, is a reasonably believable attempt to explain the affair that shook her world. What it says about Monica is that she is a very pretty, somewhat stunted near-teeny-bopper with a "You want fries with that?" vocabulary. What it says about Clinton is that he should have gone to jail for child abuse. Here's the transcript of Larry King's pre-show interview last night which may be more than you need to stay informed.

Ari Steps in It: Poor Ari Fleischer had to scramble after a press briefing at which he spoke the truth about the Harlem Globetrotter (thank you, Bill Safire.) It seems several Clinton aides objected to what he had to say. It is sweet that he not only listens to them but wants to make them happy. And, while we are on Clinton aides.......who the hell is Julia Payne? Have we missed some 3000 word puff piece in the Washington Post Style section? Any other spokeshuman for a former president who issues as many statements as this woman would have been profiled at every level of the media. Maybe there is no Julia Payne and that's just the generic for anyone available in Hillary's office. Just asking.

No More Froot Loops! What a petulant little snarl of killers those Gitmo terrorists are turning out to be. First they want to be covered by the Geneva conventions, then they want to talk to Ramsey Clarke. Now, after we've tried so hard to come up with a politically correct menu they won't eat it. We say, feh! When they get hungry enough they will. Next they will want cable and a trip to the zoo.

Duck, Doris....Incoming: The hammering of Doris Kearns Goodwin continues with this threat that they may throw her off the Pulitzer committee . The piling on seems to be driven by more than her admission that she "inadvertently" lifted work not her own. Could it be that she didn't recognize what she had "borrowed" because she didn't write any of it at all? Oops, sorry. Such a suggestion could be taken as piling on.
