greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

oh my goodness. I have to guineas, and I had great fun feeding them, they would follow me around, meet me when I came home. Now, the more "friendly" one...well, he has turned aggressive!! He went from lifting his wings at me to now running into me and biting!!! Is it mating season? WIll he always be like this? I"m pregnant with my first child, and I don't want a bird attacking!

please help

Yes, it is the time of year for guineas to pair off and start scouting out nesting sites. If he's that agressive now, just wait till they hatch some chicks (this is assuming that the other guinea is a female?) I have had guinea moms and dads fly (more like dive- bomb) at my head more times than I can count when they have keets and they thought I got too close. You have to give them a wide berth. They are terrible parents and I have even been attacked when trying to return keets who have been left behind as the parents continue on their rounds through rain, mud, wet grass, whatever. They don't even slow down - leave keets all over the place, chirping their little heads off. So many die off that we have a joke around here about baby guinea jerky. The dogs won't eat them while they are freshly dead, but after they dry out they'll hunt them up, carry them around, and eat them for weeks (that's how long it takes them to find all the keets, there are usually so many.)It's so pitiful, I try to collect all the eggs I can find so they don't have so many babies to kill. If I ever need more guineas, I set a few eggs under a banty hen. The only reason I allow them to stay on the farm is that they do such a great job keeping the bug population down. Good luck!

After years of experience with these birds, I can only tell you that once they have "gone aggressive" I have never had them stop. Shot a couple in my days. Had one old boy decide for some reason he just didn't like turkey babies and caught him viciously attacking them. Wierd, wonder what gets into their heads?? For the most part mine have been peace loving.

I have several guineas and they leave me alone. Maybe you could get a couple more male guineas to keep him busy. This works for my roosters too. They are so busy with each other, I don't get bothered. Best wishes!
