homesteading show

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

For anyone who's instrested, the Frontier House series is coming to PBS April 29th. I think this will be very intersting. It's about couples living and homesteading just like they did in the 1800's.

Thanks for letting us know !! We sent our names in to be choosen to have this "experience" but we were told they wanted families that had no homesteading or knowledge of living without the luxeries of life. We thought it would be great...almost like a vacation for us. Just to be able to concentrate on homesteading and no outside jobs for a couple of months. But I think they wanted "city" type folk. I'm looking forward to seeing the show. !!! Thanks again !!

I saw previews for this an it looks really wonderful. The down thing is they never really did get away from technilogy as it seemed they all had laptop computers for note taking, I think! It it still looks interesting.

Do you know day and time it will air. Sounds like it will be interesting. I wonder if those city slickers can hack it? Maybe for a short time.

They just said April 29th they did not give a time. I'm sure the tv guide will list it the week it's coming on. My luck it will come one the same time my husbands favorite show comes on. It will be on Monday I believe.

Of course they didn't want people who had any notion of what they were doing!! What kind of show would that be? Only one's interested would have been us "back to the landers" and we seem to be a minority. Not much money for the big shots. Did you see the show called The 1900's House? About a suburban family in England who had to live as a family from 1900. I loved it! All the pathos you could ever want....silly citified city slikers....don't know it all afterall! hehehehehe It did give me heartburn tho...I wanted to jump in and show them how. I can't wait for this "real" version of Survivor. It's groan time!

Go to the PBS web site for even more info, I enjoyed the 1900's house very much, I giggled to myself alot, but it was really a good show.

I am looking forward to the next one, {I'm kinda expecting to laugh out loud a few times watching it) but, I think it will be well worth watching.

I think it's too bad that they only wanted people who have had "No" country living experiences. Regardless of whether you've had them or not it's still a very huge challenge for any family. I think a country oriented family would have been wonderful to watch and to see just how strong they really are. Country families may have animal knowledge, cooking, cleaning, and canning experience but they still have all the modern day conveniences of today and utilize them. We go to the store. We use our washer and dryer. Our diswasher, computer, video games, TV, VCRs and we don't get ready for winter in the way they did in the 1800s. Sure we get hay, but it's delivered to us on a big semitruck. We don't go out and rake it by hand or cut it by hand. If we cut and bale and stack our own hay or feed, it's done by very big machinery that we drive! Sure we do wood but we can also have it delivered. We're just as spoiled with modern day stuff as a city person and I think it's too bad that country people were not given a chance to experience what their grandparents might have gone through to it's fullest. Thank you for your time. Ruth Gallaty
