when can I use the milk?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

I was giving penicillen last week, finished Thursday (re: thread on retained placenta). Mom seems to be doing great now and is feeding the twins plus I am milking out not quite a litre twice a day. (Litre =I think a little less than a quart in US) I have been feeding the milk to the cats and dog, when do you think it is OK for us? I am thinking that probably the kids will soon be taking most of this extra milk, is that right? How old should the kids be when I could pen them separate at night and take the morning milk, I don't want to deprive them. Thanks

Terri it is 5 days if you used it subq, longer if you used it IM and even longer up to 10 days if you used the long lasting kind. I would stretch any dose at any route to 30 days if anybody drinking the milk was allergic to pennicillin. Your second question I have not a clue about :) vicki

Terri, We start penning up the kids at night away from thier mom at around 3 weeks for the does that get to keep thier kids. Some people start at 2 weeks. Right now I only need enough milk for 3 extra kids and our own household use, so I only pull them for 3-4 hours.
